

COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Venita Horton Cannon, 75, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 30, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mrs. Cannon died Sunday, April 26, 2015. Born in Bethune, she was a daughter of the late Thomas L. Horton and Kathleen Horton. She was a 1957 graduate of Eau Claire High School, met her husband in 1958 at Doug Broome’s Drive-in, worked as an executive secretary for 34 years at Bellsouth and volunteered at Crescent Hill Food Pantry. She enjoyed sewing, smocking, crocheting, knitting, reading and crossword puzzles. Mrs. Cannon spent a lot of time praying for others and found great strength in her faith; she was an active member at Shandon Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. Cannon loved her family, especially her grandchildren. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, William A. Cannon, Jr.; daughters, Robin C. Spitler (Adam) of Statesboro, Ga., Renee C. Smith (Larry) of Elgin; grandchildren, Jonah C. and Caleb S. Smith, Madison A., Olivia K. and Noah P. Spitler; sister, Lewellyn Reppenhagen of West Columbia; and brother, Thomas W. Horton, Sr. (Marilyn) of Columbia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Missions Ministry at Shandon Baptist Church, 5250 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC 29206.
