Victor was born on June 1, 1956, to the late Mrs. Euris McMillan Grimes in the beautiful country of Trinidad and Tobago. His love of home in Trinidad and Tobago never left, and he came to the United States to study at Howard University, where he met his wife, Sharon Baron. After getting his bachelor's degree at Howard, he moved to Columbia to get his master's degree at the University of South Carolina.
A devoted son, brother, father, and Papi, Victor would continue his life in Columbia, where he and Sharon had two daughters, Aisha and Saidah, and one son, Torron, along with two grandsons, TJ and Luke, and one granddaughter, Nicole.
Victor was a program manager for the State of South Carolina at the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) for over 35 years.
In his free time, Victor could be found spending time with his family, watching and refereeing soccer, and watching sports. He shared his love and passion for soccer through his grandchildren and by refereeing recreational, club, middle, and high school soccer games for over 20 years. Weekends for Victor would start early with watching a few soccer games, cricket matches, and whatever other sport he could find until his grandchildren arrived, where he would set up the backyard as a water park just for them to enjoy.
In addition to loving sports, he discovered a passion for the arts and enjoyed seeing a Broadway play in New York, a ballet in Columbia, and listening to new music from around the world.
Nothing compared to his love of his family – they were the light of his life. He would talk about them to anyone who would listen.
Victor is survived by his wife, Sharon Baron, three children Aisha Barnwell, Saidah Grimes, and Torron Grimes, three grandchildren Torron Grimes Jr, Luke Barnwell, and Nicole Barnwell, and two sisters Merlyn (Michael) Thomas and Eileen (Trevor) Thomas and two brothers Mervin Grimes and Alexander Grimes, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, coworkers and soccer family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law Trevor.
A Funeral Service for Victor Grimes will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, June 28, 2024, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with a Visitation to be held one hour prior to the service, at 1:00 pm.
