Mrs. Virginia Whitmire Carter

COLUMBIA A funeral service for Virginia Whitmire Carter, 85, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Burial will be private in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Carter passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2017. Born in Pickens, she was a daughter of the late Walter Silas and Clovie Stewart Whitmire. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and retired as a teacher from Bradley Elementary School. She enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing and spending time with her family. She was a member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Samuel Tompkins Carter Jr.; daughters, Carol Carter Swearingen and husband, Bubba, of Hopkins, Cathy Carter Boone and husband, Alan, of Blythewood; grandchildren, Suzanna Rooks (Jon), G.W. Swearingen (Kaitlin), Sam Swearingen (Beth), Shelby Swearingen, Brook Boone; great-grandchildren, Lyon Rooks and Elodie Rooks; and brothers, Donald T. Whitmire of Charlotte and Furman Whitmire of Pickens; and nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home, 2900 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205 or a charity of one’s choice.
