Wallis Windsor Carter Houseman, 88, passed peacefully on November 18, 2025. The daughter of Mamie and Woodrow Carter, Wallis was a native of Georgetown and lived most of her life on the coast of South Carolina at South Litchfield and DeBordieu Colony before moving to Still Hopes in Columbia in 2019.
Wallis finished Winyah High School in 1955, active in debate and basketball. A lifelong educator, she began her teaching career upon graduation from the University of South Carolina, where she was a sister in the Eta Gamma Chapter of Chi Omega Sorority. Wallis met her future husband Chuck during her first job at the Beaufort Air Station Housing School, where he was stationed as a Marine Corps pilot. They were married in 1960 and enjoyed 62 years together, spending the early years of their lives at duty stations in North Carolina, California and Washington, D.C.
Upon her husband’s retirement, the family moved back to South Carolina where Wallis continued to teach school as Chuck entered his second career as a Realtor for The Litchfield Company. Wallis followed her passion for beautiful decor by starting her own interior design business which thrived for 26 years. Together they made a fabulous team at work and at play, enjoying a full social life and spending many happy hours on the beach with their beloved dogs.
Not only did Wallis run her own business, she volunteered her time and talents with a number of causes, such as the Georgetown Historical Society, The USC Alumni Council, Hospice of Georgetown County and the Advisory Council of Hollins Cancer Center. She stayed active each and every day of her life, always thinking of others and what she could do for friends and family. Her smile was known and recognized far and wide, as was her flair for hospitality.
Wallis is survived by her daughters, Trace Houseman Ballou and Sloane Houseman Molloy; three cherished grandsons, Noah Houseman Ballou, Charles Ellery Ballou and Christian Marc Molloy; a son-in-law, Mehrdad Vejdani; her brothers Fletcher Carter, Michael Carter and Ashley Carter; and many much-loved nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Wallis is predeceased by her husband Charles Arthur “Chuck” Houseman, sister Bailey Carter Weaver, and brother Henry Carter.
