John was born on June 8, 1964, to John, Jr. and Elisabeth Hutchins in Ft. Knox, Kentucky. As the only child in a military family, John had the fortunate opportunity to travel, live and experience life in Panama, Iran and Germany, until his family ultimately settled in St. Petersburg, Florida. It was there that John made numerous friendships that lasted throughout his lifetime.
When John was 19, he was faced with and beat cancer, strongly supported by his family and friends. He went on and was proud to be a graduate of Wake Forest University with a degree in Political Science.
John’s career was mainly in retail, where he worked first with Kmart Corporation in stores in Florida and ultimately at the Kmart Corporate headquarters in Michigan. John’s career areas were in marketing, advertising and merchandising. It was when he was with Kmart that he met his soon-to-be wife Karen and they ultimately married in April 1993. John left Kmart and relocated from Michigan back to his home of St. Petersburg, Florida to join the Eckerd Drug Company where he again worked in retail marketing and advertising. During that time, John’s mother passed away from lung cancer and John was blessed with the birth of a son, John Augustus Hutchins IV. When John was presented with a promotional opportunity with AMR Research in Boston, he moved with his family to New England and settled in New Hampshire.
After working with AMR Research for a year, John had the honor of being with and caring for his father in St. Petersburg as his father battled and eventually succumbed to Guillane Barree Syndrome. After settling his father’s life, John returned to New Hampshire and his family and worked for a time with the wonderful people of the Concord Coop and the New Hampshire Lottery.
For the past several years, John was a licensed Real Estate Broker with Better Homes & Gardens, Maisiello Realty, working with his partner in the greater Concord residential area. Through his time with the Lottery, Coop and in real estate, John was able to meet with and touch many people’s lives. Real estate was the perfect career for John; many people see a room, a house or a lot and see what it is. John would see a room, a house, or a lot and see what it could be. He had a gift of vision and was able to bring that to his clients to help make perfect residential matches.
John had many interests, often saying he was a ‘jack of all trades but a master of none.’ No interest was more important to John, though, than his son, Gus. Gus was the love of his life and John tried to teach Gus to live his personal motto: Value Each Day. Live, Love, Laugh and Play.
John was predeceased by both his mother and father, Elisabeth and John A. Hutchins, Jr. John is survived by his wife of 17 years, Karen Hutchins, and his son, John A. Hutchins IV (Gus). In addition, John is survived by his second “mom,” his mother-in-law, Rolande Streeter, and his “brothers” since middle school, Bob Brown of Florida and Spencer St. Cyr of Maryland.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Church of Concord on Friday, August 27 at 10:00 A.M. immediately followed by a Celebration of Life gathering in St. Peter’s parish hall. Although he tried, John never really embraced the northern climate and his heart longed for the warmth of the Florida winds. If you have a Hawaiian shirt, wear it as per John’s last request. His wish was that his departure not be a somber event, but an opportunity to celebrate his life and to appreciate the life each of us has but may be too busy to appreciate and enjoy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the wonderful staff at the Concord Hospice House, who provided the care that allowed John to remain at home through this journey with cancer, or to the American Diabetes Association in the name of his son, Gus, in hopes for a cure for Type I diabetes. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in St. Petersburg, Florida for his Florida family and friends.
The Bennett Funeral Home of Concord is in charge of the arrangements.
