

Ray was born in Bronx, NY on January 24, 1942 to Mary and Jim Steenbeke. In 1954 Ray and his family moved to Boscawen, NH, after purchasing Reed’s Grocery Store. Steenbeke’s Grocery Store eventually evolved into Steenbeke and Sons Home Center.
Ray graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1965 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After a brief stint at Link Aviation working on the Apollo Project, Ray moved to Lowell, MA to work for Westinghouse as an Engineer. Soon after, Ray’s father gave him an opportunity to work in the family business and he never looked back. In 1966 Ray moved his family to Boscawen NH to work for Steenbeke and Sons. He loved working for Steenbeke and Sons and continued there until his retirement in 2002. In October 1998 he received an award for being a member of the Executive Committee of the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association.
Ray was a very active member in Concord Country Club. He served as president from 1999-2001 and made many valuable contributions to the improvement of the club. During his 49 year membership, he developed many lifelong friendships.
In retirement, Ray traveled across the country in a small camper and eventually bought a house in Gold Canyon, AZ. From that point on, he spent every winter in AZ, golfing and enjoying his new friends. Ray is survived by his loving wife, Leslie, his son, Ray Jr and his wife Hanh, his daughter Teresa, his brother Donald and his wife Janice, his brother Jim and his wife Helen, as well as many nieces and nephews and loving friends. His wife of 25 years, Carole predeceased him in 2015. Ray’s parents predeceased him in 2001 and 2004. He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Granite VNA at The Slusser Center, 30 Pillsbury Street, Concord, NH 03301. A memorial to Ray’s life will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 2PM at the Grappone Conference Center, 70 Constitution Ave, Concord, NH.
