November 17, 1921- June 6, 2015
CONTOOCOOK - Robert (Bob) Garvin was born the third son of Orville and Ethel Lufkin Garvin of Epping, New Hampshire.
Educated in the Epping Schools, he graduated from Watson Academy in 1939 and served as his graduating class’ historian. Bob intended to enter UNH for Engineering, but those plans were interrupted by World War II, as he enlisted, served in the United States Army in Germany and was discharged as a Second Lieutenant.
Bob married Jean E. Corney in 1943 and they had three sons, Bill, Gary and Kip and a daughter, Jerry Jean who died shortly after her birth. Bob and Jean lived in Hopkinton, where they raised their family as he worked as a US Postal Carrier and as a sign painter for local businesses and Jean owned Wolf Meadow Antiques. There are still many signs around the Town of Hopkinton that are of Bob’s handiwork. Upon his retirement from the Postal Service, Bob and Jean traveled around the United States and enjoyed spending the winters in Florida.
Bob enjoyed woodcarving, painting rocks of historical buildings, candlepin bowling, golf, and he belonged to the VFW, Masons, American Legion and the DAV. He enjoyed the luncheons at the Slusser Senior Center in recent years.
Bob became a widower when Jean died in 1988. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Jeff, Kelly and Kyle, and the lessons he taught them will teach Garvins for generations to come.
In 1997, Bob married June Burleigh and they moved to Elm Brook Village. They enjoyed traveling and enjoyed many cruises together. They lived there until Bob’s recent illness made it impossible for him to remain as independent a person as Bob wished to be.
Bob is survived by his sons, William (Susan) of Appleton, WI; Gary (Candie) of Contoocook, NH; and Kip and his partner, Melanie McNeil,of Concord, NH.; three grandchildren Jeff, Kelly and Kyle and two great grandchildren, Adelaide and Elidi. He is also survived by his wife, June Burleigh Garvin, brothers William Garvin of Anaheim, CA and Lester Garvin of Ashfield, MA; former daughter in law Debra and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Jean, Bob was predeceased by his parents, brothers Elmer and Clarence and sister Evelyn.
The family would like to thank the staff of the rehabilitation floor of Pleasant View Nursing Home, the staff at Concord Hospital, the Hopkinton Rescue Squad, and Dr Francis Milligan for the care given to Bob and the support for family members.
