Bertie Smith, age 96, of Newton, went home to be with her Lord and Savior and beloved husband, Darvin on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. Born December 5, 1918, she was the daughter of the late John Pickney Jones and Laura Hollar Jones. Bertie enjoyed every moment with her family and always shared very special moments with her grandchildren. She was introduced to her soul mate and very best friend, Darvin. They were married on July 21, 1940 and were blessed with two beautiful children Michael and Sandra. Bertie was very devoted to St. John’s Lutheran Church and was very proud to be the oldest member there. She spent her life devoted to family and being great wife and mother. She was a very special lady that touched all that knew her, she will be greatly missed but her heritage and pride will be carried on with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Darvin Alvin Smith; three brothers and five sisters.
Left with wonderful memories and life stories are her son, Michael L. Smith and wife, Ellen, of Knoxville, TN; daughter, Sandra Smith Riddle and husband, Steven, of Davidson, NC; grandchildren, Matthew Riddle of Morehead City, NC, Jennifer Rainey and husband, David, of Shell Beach, CA, Ryan Riddle and wife, Jennifer, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Whitney Hughes and husband, Allen, of Newton; great-grandchildren, Nevaeh Hughes, Carter Rainey, Wyatt Riddle and Michael Hughes.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Scott Johnson and Rev. Anton Lagoutine officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Her family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Bertie was surrounded with wonderful and devoted caregivers that were truly a gift from God. The family will always hold a very special place in their hearts for Della Parkhurst and Barbara Hess and the wonderful staff of Catawba Valley Regional Hospice.
