

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn D. Major; brothers Joe, Harry, Norman, Russell and George; sisters Beatrice, Elizabeth and Nancy; grandson Charles Gauntt and son-in-law Phillip Hickey.
Left to cherish his memory are daughters Darlene (Jerry) Knight, of Conover NC, Susan (Darrell) Reid, of Conover NC, Kimberly Major, of Newton, NC and Shirley Hickey of Harrodsburg KY; 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Growing up in New Jersey as a share cropper's son, he learned early the value of hard work and the responsibility of taking care of family himself after his father's death. In New Jersey, Charles worked on many farms before taking a job at Riverside Metal Works. Later he started his own construction company. Evelyn and Charles owned and operated the Pine Street Deli in Mt. Holly, NJ.
After retirement they moved to North Carolina and he became very involved with community outreach including Habitat and the Newton Depot. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Newton, NC.
A celebration of life will be Monday, February 28, 2022 at 5:30pm at First Presbyterian Church, 701 N. Main Ave. Newton. Rev. David Roquemore will officiate with Suzanne Rhinehart delivering the eulogy.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the narthex of the church.
