

Born November 26, 1917 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Ivey Bowman Drum and Ada Lee Drum. Hayes was a member of Center United Methodist Church and retired from the U. S. Postal Service. Prior to his career in the Postal Service, he retired from the United States Navy as Master Chief Petty Officer, having served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and the Fleet Reserve Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Minnie Lou Drum, Trilby Drum Warren; and brother, Ezra “Stump” Drum.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Earlene Sigmon Drum; daughter, Carol Ann Drum of Catawba; sister, Glenna Sherrill of Newton; and brother, Anthony Drum of Stanley, NC.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Center United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. John Love officiating. A graveside service with Naval Military Honors will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. prior to the service.
