William Engel Holt

Dr. William Engel “Bill” Holt, DDS, age 87, of Conover, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 5, 2017, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, NC. Born June 2, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of the late Paul John Holt and Anne Martha Engel Holt.

Bill was educated at the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania. Following graduation, Bill joined the US Navy as a dentist and served during the Korean War. After the war, Bill completed his residency in oral surgery in Oakland CA, where he met his wife Ann. He and Ann then moved to Conover, NC, and Bill opened his practice as an oral surgeon, serving the Hickory area for over 30 years. Following retirement, Bill volunteered for several years in the free dental clinic at Cooperative Christian Ministries in Hickory, NC. He was an active member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover, NC, where he had served as an elder, usher, a member of the stewardship committee and was former chair of the Christian Day School Board. Bill was also a former member of the Conover Lions Club, an active member of the Conover YMCA and Bible Study Fellowship.

In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by his brother, Frank Holt.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Ann Brady Holt; sons, Jon Holt and wife, Lori of Conover, NC, Paul Holt and wife Kim of Conover, NC, and William Holt and wife Melanie of Raleigh, NC; daughter, Anne Elizabeth Holt of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Sara Holt, Hannah Holt, Jacob Holt, Sam Holt, Olivia Holt, and Charlie Holt; and sister-in-law, Marianne Holt of Michigan.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Concordia Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. A graveside service with military rites by American Legion Post #16 will follow at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory, NC. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 to 2:45 PM on Sunday, prior to the service.
