Born February 10, 1973, in San Jose, California, Christopher Charles Newbern passed away in The Woodlands, Texas, on April 14, 2025, at the age of 52. Chris bravely faced Inclusion Body Myositis for over two decades, a relentless disease that gradually weakened his muscles. In his final moments, the disease reached his diaphragm, and he drew his last breath surrounded by the love of those close to him.
Before the challenges posed by his disability, Chris built a career in graphic design, where his creativity and eye for detail shone brightly. Beyond his professional life, he embraced a variety of passions. He found joy in the tactile art of pottery, the flavorful craft of smoking meats, and the satisfying process of brewing his own beer. Even as his physical abilities changed, Chris's energy and enthusiasm remained undimmed. In recent years, he channeled his sharp mind into trading cryptocurrency and delighted in sharing mouthwatering food videos with his friends, a testament to his enduring zest for life and connection.
For the past seven years, Chris found unwavering companionship and support in his service dog, Powers III, from Canine Companions. Powers was more than just an aid; he was a cherished member of the family and Chris's loyal sidekick. Following his dedicated service, Powers will continue to live with the family in his well-deserved retirement.
Chris is preceded in death by his mother, Caroline Newbern. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Newbern, son, David Newbern, sister & brother-in-law, Courtney (Newbern) and Brian Brownewell, nephews, Calvin, Luke, Trey, and Emmett Brownewell, father & stepmother, David and Sue Newbern, aunt and uncle, Pam and John Boyle, uncle and aunt, Chuck Wattles and Isabelle DuBois and brothers-in-law, Ryan Schomburg and Tavi Pierson.
Chris was a strong advocate for raising awareness about Inclusion Body Myositis. He would have appreciated it if those who wish to honor his memory would take a moment to learn more about this disease at myositis.org or by visiting the IBMyositis channel on YouTube at https://youtube.com/@ibmyositis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canine Companions, PO Box 446, Santa Rosa, CA 95402.
