Evelyn Avon Sanders was born September 27th, 1929 to James Boyce Brooks and Allie Mae McWhorter in Cisco, Texas. She went to be with our Lord on January 20th, 2018 at age 88. She grew up in various West Texas towns absent her father after age five. With her grandmother, mother & sister she assisted as best she could in operating a small family store usually located near a school to support school children with supplies and snacks. She figured that she’d eventually marry someone from that area and live the life of a rancher’s wife. She graduated R. L. Paschal High School in Ft. Worth, TX while her mother was working at Carswell Air Base assembling aircraft during WW II. Later moving to Dallas she worked in various sales positions. She spent time In Abilene, Texas attending Hardin-Simmons University studying typing and bookkeeping and Art. She was supported by her Aunt and Uncle Zadie & Sam Kennedy. Aunt Zadie was a Librarian there. On Dec. 12, 1947 she married George S. Harris, a pipefitter in Houston, TX. Michael Wayne and Rebecca Elaine were born to them in short time. They settled in Greens Bayou, TX (later annexed by Houston) for 25 years. During that time she worked as a hostess at the Horizon House Restaurant at the newly opened Hobby Airport. She later worked as a Clerk Typist for Houston Pipe and Steel. After purchasing farm property in Montgomery County, she made multiple trips each week to feed nursing calves. From 1960 to 1964 they were involved in local politics supporting matters pertinent to George’s work and Liberal Democratic agendas. Her childhood exposed her to the challenges women faced in business and keenly supported Women’s agendas. In 1964 Lisa Diane was born followed sixteen months later by Linda Ann. Now with young children again she still tended the cattle as needed with help from Michael who was now old enough to drive and attend to them.
George’s work away from home brought on stresses that ended in divorce. Avon moved with Lisa & Linda to Dallas, TX, to be near her remaining close family. She took a job with the City of Dallas Accounting office where she worked for 25 years. As her circle of family members with whom she had grown up with passed on she married James I. Sanders on Aug. 14, 1994 in Dallas, TX. They spent time with Church and Freemasons activities. They also traveled to visit friends & family until his passing in Dec. 1998. On her retirement she moved back nearer to the coast and children at Conroe, TX. There she enjoyed the company of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Over the years she collected a number of goblets varying from plain to ornate from a number of places. Each was unique to her and she loved serving her guests beverages in them at gatherings. She always had pets. Not discriminating between cats or dogs there were just about always one or the other or both present. She welcomed her children’s pets for as long as the pets could stand it. She enjoyed perusing art galleries loving many types of expression, subject and media. She is preceded in death by her grandmother Callie Julia McWhorter, her mother Allie Mae McWhorter Rehn, her sister Jan Elaine Smith, her daughter Rebecca Elaine Harris, and husbands George S. Harris and James I. Sanders. She is survived by her son Michael W. Harris and wife Donna, daughters Lisa Diane Harris, Linda Ann Harris; nieces Marla Aguilar and husband Frank, Rilda Lamon and Husband Don; grandchildren James C. (Chris) Vaughn and wife Angel, Jason C. Wieghat and wife Jackie, Justin P. Wieghat and wife Dayna; great grandchildren Jaclyn Vaughn, Kyndall Wieghat, Teagan Wieghat, Kynadi Wieghat.
