He was preceded in death by all his parents and one daughter Kimberly Virginia Barbo (d.1967), sisters Alberta (Del Rio) Dortlon and Mayberta (Del Rio) LeCour and one brother John Nelson Barbo.
HP passed peacefully at home on September 20, 2019 in Conroe, TX at the age of 81.
Born of meager means, he told a story time and time again of hardship, prejudice, segregation, a stolen heritage and how even the identity of his family was denied. This would be a burden he would carry throughout his life to somehow right this wrong. Thankfully, he lived to see this day. HP his direct descendants and numerous extended family members stand validated for their Native American heritage. As of 2017, The Natchitoches Tribe of Louisiana, with full documentation of bloodlines for all its tribal members is recognized as a sovereign nation.
As a small child he rode a horse to school and worked after hours to help out his family. As an older boy, he would get on a truck from the lake picking up people to work in the fields to hoe the corn or pick cotton. He would reminisce about laying it on a scale, writing the pounds in a book and getting paid at the end of the week. He talked about being in the fields for days at a time. A hard worker indeed! He loved the Louisiana Hayride and as an older teen, his fun seemed to be had anywhere that Elvis and Hank Williams were performing! HP was also a REAL cowboy! He was hired on for weeks at a time herding cattle up into Arkansas and back down to Louisiana. Living out of the trail…oh the stories he could tell!
In 1961, at the age of 23, HP married his sweetheart Dusty. Shortly after, they moved to Houston, Texas with 2 small daughters where he started working for REA, Southern Pacific Railroad and HB&T. The railroad would later see another name change to Union Pacific Railroad. He was a switchman by trade and a foreman by rank, respectfully referred to as CHIEF by his team for many years. He retired in March of 2000 with nearly 40 years of service. What started off as a lucrative career move, ended up being one of HP’s greatest passions, trains! He was a TRUE Railroad Man at heart and his love and respect for the industry lives on even in his great-grandchildren!
HP is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Modesta (Sharbino) Barbo, daughters Denise (Barbo) Miller and husband Greg, Renee’ (Barbo) Martin and husband Phil, grandchildren Brittany (martin) Mofley and husband Nick, Bradley H.P. Miller and wife Lindsey, Baron Lee Miller and wife Amy, and Courtney (Martin) Krogel and husband Brandon, 13 great grandchildren Benjamin Mofley, Adalynn Mofley, Selah Miller, Tobeigh Miller, Gabriel Mofley, Corey Miller, Tirzah Miller, Roman Miller, Abel Krogel, Josslyn Mofley, Marty Miller, Hadassah Miller, and Elsie Krogel, brother Frank Victor Perot, Jr. and wife Ruby and sister Jo Alice (Barbo) Tyler.
