Mr. Jesse (Jay) "Pops" Harmon Burroughs Jr.

Jesse (Jay) H. Burroughs, Jr., or “Pops” as we called him, was born in Houston, TX on September 11, 1934 and died on September 28, 2010. He was 76 years old. Jay was born to Jesse Burroughs, Sr. and Lois Burkhalter and he and his sister, Barbara Geraldine, spent their younger years in the Houston area. He and his family moved to the Conroe area in 1968 and he began a career in the custom home building business. He built many of the homes in the River Plantation Subdivision, as well as several other areas. Other careers included working in the air conditioning business, opening a men’s wear store, called The Baron, in Conroe, working in the home interior/model home business and owning and operating Jay’s Liquor stores in the north Houston area. He loved old cars and restored many to their former beauty. Jay is survived by his daughters, Paula Mitchell and Husband, James of Bay City, TX; Judi Thomas and husband, James of Conroe, TX; and Jana Burroughs of Willis, TX. Also surviving him are grandchildren, Lyndsey Hermes and husband, James of Houston, TX; Kristen Franks of Pearland, TX; Jaycie Feller of Chickamauga, GA; Jamie Foster and husband, Jared of Conroe, TX Jason Thomas and fiancé, Bonnie Butler of Conroe, TX; and Jacob Thomas and wife, Jennifer of Willis, TX. Eight great-grandchildren also survive. They are Hadyn Hermes, Jordan, Alexis, Jalynn and Alyssa Feller, Jesse Foster, Gage Thomas and Jrake Thomas. A friend who was like a brother, Bob Arnold and his wife, Dolly, as well as many other friends and family also survive. Jay’s wishes were to be cremated and the family will be celebrating his life at a private memorial service. We would like to thank the Rio Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross for sending a bus to rescue him and his grand-daughter, Kristen, from his home during Hurricane Ike.
