LARRY BINGHAM MOORE, 65, of Conroe, Tex. passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 − just two days after retiring from teaching science at Moorhead Junior High in Conroe ISD. His untimely death is a loss to friends, family members, and the community who benefited from his labors and personality.
Moore was born to A.B. and Lovie Moore in Houston, Tex. on Oct. 6, 1952 − growing up with sister Peggy Moore McCaslin and younger brother Jerry Don Moore. He attended Sam Houston High School in North Houston.
After graduation, Moore enrolled in classes at the University of Houston, but was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1972 during the Vietnam War. He was trained as a radar repair specialist at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and finished his service in the 101st Airborne Unit at Fort Monmouth, N.J.
In 1974, Moore returned home, married Angela Glenn, and had two children: Kristofer Robin in 1975, and Jamie Fern in 1984. Larry resumed classes at the University of Houston and received a degree at the Hilton College of Hotel & Restaurant Management, subsequently working at several high profile convention hotels in the greater Houston area.
Due to his personality, technical skills, and strong work ethic, Larry was recruited by Ecolab, the industry leader in commercial products for water systems and environmental safety in the hospitality and other industries.
As an avid outdoorsman, Moore enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with friends and family. He proved successful in hunting with bow, black powder, rifle, and shotgun − often serving as a mentor to less experienced friends and family members. Much of what he shot made its way to the dinner table for his family and friends.
Moore was also proficient with tools and talented as a craftsman, able to handle a wide range of tools for residential and commercial repair − a skill he often shared by teaching friends and co-workers the skills he had acquired. Hobbies included creation of custom knives, wood barrel pens, and other handmade objects he often gave as gifts.
After completing an alternative certification program Larry pursued a new career in science education. He taught for 13 years at Moorhead Junior High School, where he was joined by his daughter for the last 9 of those. Larry quickly became a highly regarded science teacher at Moorhead Junior High School and received a Teacher of the Year award within his first few years. He participated in and lead many activities on behalf of his school and Conroe ISD. He earned the respect of students, faculty, and administrators alike − earning awards and accolades for his contributions to education.
During this time, Larry reconnected with the love of his life, Janice Lewis Williamson, a former junior high/high school classmate, and fellow teacher. They formed a strong familial bond, working and living together, engaging in a wide range of social and recreational activities.
A favorite pastime for Moore was travel with his close friends and family. He and Janice enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle on outings in the Las Vegas area as well as Texas and New Mexico. Summers found them exploring National Parks throughout the United States with Yosemite, Zion and Crater Lake as favorites. Trips to Chicago, Detroit and New Orleans were filled with museums, music, family and fun. Most recently, Larry and Janice took a three-week tour of Europe, accomplishing a lifelong dream of visiting Ireland, Scotland, England and Paris.
While his skills were many, it was Larry's personality and integrity that attracted and endeared him to friends and family. While he was intimidating to some because of his personal physique and often gruff demeanor, those who took the time to get to know him came to respect him for his commitment to helping those around him. He was a man's man, but one who cared about others and demonstrated that personable trait by word and deed.
Larry officially retired on January 12th and was celebrated by friends and coworkers at a retirement dinner on January 13th. The next day, while on a hunting trip with a close friend, Larry suffered a debilitating stroke and was rushed to Huntsville Memorial Hospital where he passed away.
Larry is survived by the love of his life, Janice Williamson; daughter Jamie Fern Bailey and husband Ryan of Conroe; sister Peggy Moore McCaslin and husband Tom of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter-in-law Hillary Moore Embry and husband Jacob of Klein, Tex.; grandchildren Krystal Ann Moore, Kelly Marie Moore-Embry, Logan Embry, Liz Huber, and numerous nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents A.B. and Lovie Moore of Spring, Tex.; son Kristofer Robin Moore of Anderson, Tex. and his brother Jerry Don Moore of Houston, Tex.
A memorial and celebration of life service in honor of Larry Moore will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 20 at Cashner Funeral Home, located at 801 Teas Nursery Road in Conroe. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Larry Moore Science Education Scholarship Fund or the American Heart Association in his name.
