Luther graduated from Chapel Hill High School as a salutatorian in 1957. After attending Tyler Jr College, he went on to complete his bachelor’s degree in 1963 at Lamar University. In 1993, he earned a Master’s in Computer Science from Sam Houston State University.
While attending Lamar University, he met his wife, Paulette. After graduating, they married on August 24, 1963 and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. Luther taught math for three years before going into the computer field, primarily in the oil and gas industry.
In 1969, their son Alan was born to complete the family. The family moved to Houston in 1975 when Luther was employed by Superior Oil Company where he worked for several years. He also worked at the Lubrizol Corporation in Deer Park. He retired in 2003.
Luther enjoyed competition shooting in his early years. After retirement, Luther continued with the hobby of shooting by instructing others to enjoy the sport. Great friendships developed through the years. In addition to shooting, Luther and Paulette loved to watch wildlife and traveled frequently to the Rocky Mountain region taking pictures of birds and animals.
The family was active at First Baptist Church in The Woodlands for many years and Luther found great joy in helping the needy through the Benevolence Fund at the church.
Luther is survived by his wife Paulette, son Alan and wife Christy, grandson Michael, sister Phyllis and husband Tony, brother Jimmy and wife Linda, sister-in-law Ruby and husband John, sister-in-law Sharon and husband Jim.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of The Woodlands.
In lieu of flowers, Luther would appreciate a donation be given to the Benevolence Fund at First Baptist Church of The Woodlands.
