Obituary for Ruby L. Fisher, died May 12, 2016. Ruby Lee Whitfield was born March 31, 1933 in Bloomington, a small town in southern Texas. The oldest of three, her name honored both her mother, Ruby Fox, and her father, Lee Roy Whitfield. After graduating from Industrial High School in 1952, her father sent her to Houston to further her education or get a husband. Always the overachiever, she did both. She married Donald U. Fisher on January 9, 1954 and began her career as a mother and housewife. Ruby and Don had four children, Leigh Ann, Douglas Warren, Vickie Lynn, and Mary Ellen. Once the children all entered school, she entered the working world as a small business owner, bookkeeper, and retail associate in various enterprises. Ruby and Don enjoyed a 33 year marriage. They lived in a number of cities as Don furthered his career, finally settling in the New Orleans area until Don’s death on January 10, 1987.
Although a Texas country girl at heart, Ruby chose to remain in Louisiana to stay close to her family. There, she continued working until retiring, for the second time, in 2004. However, for Ruby, retirement did not mean rest. Instead, it meant she could devote even more time and energy to her gardening, sewing, painting, building projects, and most especially, her family. Ruby shared her passion for doing, her sense of humor, and her love of family with us for 83 years. She loved old movies, working on theater productions, poetry, gardening, a multitude of crafts, an array of music, but most of all, helping her family, whom she loved and admired with all her heart. Ruby is survived by her four children, Leigh Ann Smith, Doug Fisher, Vickie and Gary Morel, and Mary Hane; her grandchildren, Randy Smith, Gary Morel, Jr., Meagan Marshall, Molly Shotwell, and Katie Hane; and her great grandchildren, Samantha, Jordan, Sadie, and Alex Smith, Gary Morel, III, and Emily Lynn Marshall; her sister, Effie and Morris Kostoff, numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She loved them all, and though they may be far away, they were always close to her heart and in her prayers. Ruby, mom, grandma—whatever name we called you—memories of you and your life will fill our hearts with each passing day. We love you, mom, and will miss you always. Visitation will be held at Cashner Funeral Home in Conroe, Texas on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 2:00pm with funeral service following at 3:00pm. Interment will be at Garden Park Cemetery following the service.
