To all-

Ed played so many important roles in my life…
The first and shortest role was as mom’s boyfriend. He quickly won me over with our shared love of nascar and aviation.
As her husband, and my “Ed”, he then became someone who I could count on when I needed anything. If I was upset I would call him first, if I was scared, I called him first.  He was always was so calm and collected in his replies; even when I had good news to share. He became my teacher, of well, life. Some lessons were harder than others, but I never let that waiver my love and respect for him.
He knew how to be a good friend; and his role as my friend is the one I hold closest to my heart. 
Last but most important, his role as “Grandpa Ed”. Yep the kids won him over. They are blessed to have had him as their role model. I know they will all continue to make him proud because he laid a solid foundation for us.  
To Ed: Until the next time I hear you say, “it’s good to be seen”, I love you and thank you. 

I’d tell him much we loved his sometimes brutal honesty or his dry sense of humor. I would tell him that although we weren’t blood, he was a great father to me, and I’ll miss and need his guidance. I’d tell him how much I love him. I hope he sees the man I’m working to become. A man of discipline. A man and a father of great worth and integrity. A man like him.

He taught me more often through action than through words. If I didn’t know how to fix or do something I’d call Ed and ask him for advice. He’d come over with tools show me for about 30seconds how to do it, and then say “alright you do the rest!” ... And somehow I’d do it! Who else but Ed, teaches people that way?

I regret I didn’t take more time learning about his past endeavors or adventures. I’m grateful to everyone that has shared stories either here or through email to my Mom. It’s been incredible learning about the impact he made on other people’s lives. 

Ed I promise I will continue the family tradition of boy-girl-boy-girl seating. A staple in any Ulyate family dinner seating. I will go back to being Mom’s protector, a role you did so much better than I will ever. I won’t waste anymore time, and will, like you, live life to the fullest. Thank you for being uniquely you. I love you and will miss you incredibly.

When I was about 7 my parents divorced and from then until about 14 it was just me and Mom. A few times my older sister Kellie lived with us but otherwise it was pretty much just Mom and me. 

In those years, although I was a child, I felt like I was her protector. I’m her son. She’s my mom. She deserves the best and I think most sons feel that way. 

When Ed came into our lives, I think he knew that. He was a brilliant man but even more than that he was observant and calculated. He knew what he was getting into with a high school teenager for a stepson. It couldn’t have been easy. And there were times when it wasn’t, but he never once made me feel like a “stepson” or less than. He always treated me with love and respect, in his own Ed way, of course. He quickly made his way into Mom’s and my circle (a circle I didn’t think needed another person) and ended up becoming such an irreplaceable part of it.

Down the road when he’d talk to someone new he would say “our son” this or “our son” that. I miss hearing that. I miss being able to call him to run an idea I had by him or share a funny video I thought he’d enjoy. I miss sharing some of my more interesting calls I ran since I last saw him. I miss making him laugh, many times at mom’s expense (usually the story of when we were driving down a “hill” in California and he scared Mom half to death). But now that he’s gone there’s been this unfillable void left in our family. With someone as rare as Ed, I imagine it will stay that way.

If you don’t stay living in the present you may miss the impact someone has had on your life, and miss the opportunity to thank them. I would always thank Ed, but not how I wish I would have. I was too scared and time ran out too quickly, it seemed.  If I could do it over I’d tell him how much he meant to me and how much he meant to my wife. And although he just a child, how much he meant to our son, Hunter.

Ed and I met in 1989.  The circumstance was Ed's inquiry about a small warehouse I had listed for sale in Ft. Lauderdale, as a commercial broker.  He purchased the property for his own use.  Together we purchased numerous investment properties in the five or so years to come, with me as a minor partner and asset manager.  Ed and I had many similar interests from real estate to politics to cars  and although we socialized very little we became quite close, talking by phone and texting several times each year. It is a friendship that lasted until his passing earlier this year.  Ed Ulyate will always be one of my dearest friends and I miss him enormously.  He had a big heart, devout loyalty to family and friends, a gentle warmness which became more apparent as one came to know him and a very unique sense of humor.  Ed Ulyate was a one of one man! So sorry to hear of Ed's passing. I hope you both enjoyed your time spent in Michigan. I really enjoyed meeting you both when you purchased the Caledonia house.  I have my father's pony saddle on the beautiful wood saddle stand that Ed gave me.  I was so impressed that he made it. It was a perfect gift. Take care.

Susan, this is John and Teddy Butts.  We are the folks from Texas that bought your place in Belfast, Maine back in 2011.  We heard that you and Ed visited the Smiths one summer a while back.  We wish we could have connected with you while you were there.  We would have loved to have seen you both.  We are so very sorry to hear the news about Ed.  As we recall, at our first meeting him, he was a bit "prickly" at first because he thought we were realtors.  You showed up just as we were leaving, after we had walked through the place for the first time.  You wanted to know if Ed had been nice to us!  It was so cute.   If you ever get to Belfast again, in the summer anyway, we hope you will stop by and saw hello.   

Oh Susan, my heart aches for you! I really looked up to Ed. Not only was he a brilliant businessman, but a skilled craftsman as well.  I remember  his expansive woods shop and every imaginable piece of farm equipment along with his vast knowledge of how it all worked.   The man was a genius!  My only regret is that I wish we would have all met earlier in life and had more time together.  Sending love at this difficult time.
