Ida was born on February 15, 1933, in Chicago to John J. and Ida Rose (nee Altmann) Schmehil. She graduated from Providence High School in 1951. She married Frank Joseph Skittone, her high school sweetheart, on June 9, 1951. They remained in Chicago for several years and had two daughters, Lea and Susan. They later moved to Rolling Meadows, a new suburb northwest of Chicago, where daughter Tammy completed the family. They relocated to a larger home in Des Plaines, Illinois in 1966 to accommodate their growing family. Her daughters remember her as a kind mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Frank and Ida moved to Florida in 1981, where they purchased one of the first pool stores in Coral Springs, Pinch A Penny Pool and Patio. They learned the pool business, and all the daughters worked in the store. Frank died suddenly in 1986, and Ida subsequently sold Pinch A Penny.
In 1989, Ida met Vincent Monaghan at a dance. They fell in love and married in 1993. They had a wonderful life together. They loved to dance and frequently went dancing. They enjoyed travel, and their trips included many cruises and a trip to Italy. They also enjoyed finding bargains and frequented garage sales every Saturday.
After Vincent died in 2011, Ida moved to Thunderbird Villas in Coral Springs. There she enjoyed many happy times with friends in her new neighborhood. There were Rummy Cube parties, Christmas lunches, and trips to thrift stores searching for bargains. She thoroughly enjoyed her years in Thunderbird, and they were some of her happiest years.
Ida was an accomplished gardener and enjoyed spending time in her yard, planting, pruning, and rearranging. She was particularly talented at using decorative rocks and statues in her yard. She spent many happy hours in her garden. Her talents extended to indoors, where she took pride in home décor and rearranging furniture. She could do almost anything in the home, from hanging curtains, wallpapering, painting, to refurbishing furniture and just about anything else that had to do with the house. She appreciated the beauty and serenity that gardens and homes can provide. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
A memorial service is scheduled for March 2, 2022, at Kraeer Funeral Home at 1655 N University Drive in Coral Springs from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
