When he left school at the age of 15, he was employed by the National Coal Board of Wales, working underground mining coal, eventually earning an Engineering Degree from the University of Wales on a work-study program sponsored by the Coal Board. He worked for Dupont in Northern Ireland during the Troubles but after driving through several military checkpoints to get to his office for several years, he left Belfast for Milford Haven in South Wales to work for AMOCO before traveling out to Freeport, Bahamas, to be the maintenance superintendent for BORCO. In 1991 he founded Industrial Mechanical Engineering, an industrial and commercial engineering and construction company which eventually had over 100 employees on civil, mechanical and electrical projects throughout the Bahamas. An active member of the Freeport community he served as President of the Lucayan Rotary Club, was named a Paul Harris Fellow, was Grand Master of his Masonic Lodge, and participated in local sports as both player and then coach for his children’s soccer teams. He loved sports including football, golf and especially rugby and cricket which he played both as a boy and adult. A gentleman to the end, his illness never changed his kind and cheerful personality which was enjoyed by everyone who met him.
