William was born on April 21st, 1928, in Southampton, England, to parents Minnie and William Saul Duff. William attended school during World War II where during the day William was a regular school boy but when the school day ended at noon, he found a job delivering wine, beer and spirits until it was time to return to the safety of the bomb shelter, where he would ride out the nightly raids. At 16, William signed on with Southern Railway until he was 18, upon which time he began working for the first of many cargo ships. William joined the Merchant Navy in his early twenties which took him to many ports around the world such as New York, Rio, Brazil, Argentina, Capetown and too many others to mention. After his service in the Merchant Navy, William worked on liners, now known as cruise ships, with Union Castle Line which took him to ports from South Africa to the USA. After William gave up the sea, he was a rigger in a shipyard. In 1980, William and his family made the move to the United States, where his strong work ethic continued to provide support and security for him and his family.
William was a great family man, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was also an avid sports enthusiast who played and refereed cricket in his younger days. He never missed an opportunity to watch and cheer on his beloved Southampton FC, nicknamed ‘The Saints’.
His family and friends will always remember him as a hard working (and hard-headed) good-willed and sarcastically playful man, the personification of an Englishman.
