For those of you who do not know me, my name is Alex Lapointe; I am Veronica’s oldest granddaughter. I want to start by first thanking you all for coming. Your attendance here today speaks volumes about the impact that this wonderful woman had on all of us. Veronica fulfilled many roles in her life: wife, mother, sister, friend, neighbor, and to me, grandma. My tribute to my grandma today is on behalf of all her grandchildren: Ryan, Troy, Craig, Brett, Emily, and myself. I don’t think there is any doubt in anyone’s mind that the six of us were her pride and joy.
Of all the things that we could share with you about our grandma, we want you to remember her heart. Grandma was always there for us and her door was always open – literally, she rarely locked it. We will always remember her being there. She was there at every game when we were on the ice waiting for the puck to drop. She was there with a fire started when we needed to warm up from being out sledding. She was there to puppy-sit our dogs when we needed a break. But most importantly, she was there when we needed a friend.
Grandma gave us a sense of who we are and where we come from. They say that a grandmother’s house is where cousins go to become best friends. There are so many things that we will always remember. Climbing the big tree out back, we always had to make sure that we were in our right spot. Playing pool in the basement, only the smallest of us were allowed to sit on the table to make a shot. Walks in the pasture by the pond, we pretended the ground was lava and jumped from rock to rock. The sleepovers where we camped out in the living room, grandma always had the best movies and snacks. We will always cherish those memories. Grandma and Papa made it a priority to open their home to all six of us grandkids and as a result of their love for us; cousins have indeed become great friends.
One of the things I enjoyed most about my grandmother was her ability to always be honest; even when it meant telling me I could have probably gone without getting that hair colour. She was always firm in what she believed in and it is from her that we have all learned to stay strong.
Some of my fondest memories of my grandma were the simple ones. Relaxing in the living room, chatting about life. We spent countless hours talking about all the mischief the grand-puppies got into this week, while the “Days Of Our Lives” played in the background. Grandma, I hope you know how much those little moments with you mattered to me.
Grandma had a special place in her heart for animals and nature. She loved to put feeders out for the birds and take care of her flower garden. She cherished her dog Sheba and had a close bond with all of our pets. She loved to knit and there was no denying that her handmade afghans, tuques, scarves, and mitts were better and warmer than anything you could find in a store. Not to mention they were always in our favourite colours.
This story of my grandmother would not be complete if I did not mention her incredible cooking and baking. Although we did not make it easy on her with everyone having a different favourite from her recipe book, she always made sure that our preferred meal or dessert was prepared. The chocolate chip zucchini cake, the wafer and cool whip dessert, the banana bread (that my mom just cannot seem to replicate), and the many different types of squares just to name a few. She always made sure that our plates were full and we never left a Christmas meal without countless jars of salsa and pickles.
Grandma,
You impacted our lives in so many ways
You have shaped who we are
We will always love you, and save a special corner of our heart to keep you with us
Know that we will miss you every day of our lives
