

She graduated from Dyer Central in 1962, where she was proudly crowned Homecoming Queen. She retired from NIPSCO after 25 years of service. Cheryl served on the board for Edison Little League. She was an avid Cubs Fan and enjoyed attending senior dance at the Jean Sheperd Center. Anyone familiar with Cheryl knew that her family was her entire world. Spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought so much joy to her heart. Cheryl was known for her infectious smile, kind loving heart and laugh-at-life sense of humor.
Cheryl is survived by her sons, Troy (Kim) Butler of Rensselaer, IN, and Erik (Holly) Photenhauer, of Los Angeles, CA; daughters, Kayle (Chuck) Gatz, of Dyer, IN, and Kelly Butler of Dyer, IN; grandsons, Ryan (Hannah) Butler, and Levi Photenhauer; granddaughters, Zoe, Sasha, Roxy Photenhauer, and Payton Lewis (Shayne and Lincoln); great-grandchildren, Nia and Jack Butler; sisters, Patricia Sonaty, and Sandi (Jerry) Witcher; brothers, Wayne (Jane) Duncanson, Warren (Sue) Sonaty, Jr., and Tony (Debbie) Sonaty; former daughter-in-law, Kim (Robb) Fishback; and sister-in-law, Marguerite Peterson; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Jack" Photenhauer; father, Leo Duncanson; stepmother, Ruth Duncanson; mother, Lelah Sonaty; stepfather, Warren Sonaty, Sr.; and brothers, Warren Duncanson, Patrick Shinkle and Fred Shinkle.
The family would like to give a special Thank You to Cheryl’s “Team of Angels," Gina and Diana (All Points Home Health Care), and Linda and Shannon (Care in Motion) for the wonderful care that she received.
A Memorial Visitation for Cheryl will be held Friday, July 14, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307. A Memorial Service will occur Friday, July 14, 2023, at 6:30 PM. Pastor William Jones will officiate. A Private Committal Service will occur in the future.
