Don grew up in Calumet City, graduated from Thornton Fractional High School, and was an honorably discharged veteran serving the U.S. Army in South Korea. Shortly after his return, he met and married the love of his life, Shirley Gard.
Although quiet by nature, he was a stellar salesman in the printing industry throughout the Midwest. While with Mitsubishi, he was awarded numerous trips, his favorite being Japan. At home, he enjoyed carpentry projects and photography. But his true passion was sailing. His dream started with a small two-seat sailboat on Cedar Lake and later grew into a 20-foot sailboat named Radio Flyer docked in Chicago. The family enjoyed many beautiful days sailing Lake Michigan. When not sailing, he enjoyed walks on the beach, whether at the Dunes, or away on vacation.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Shirley Pawlowski; and his three devoted children, Denise Waite (Michael), Scott Pawlowski (Monica), and Dayna Pawlowski; his sister, Lori Walter (Stan Mielczarek); and sister-in-law, Barbara Pressler; grandchildren, Ryan (Alyssa), Dylan, Maigen, and Russell; great-grandchildren, Tristen, Donovan, and Scott; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 to 11:00 am on November 12, at Saint Maria Goretti Church, 500 Northgate Drive, Dyer, IN 46311. A funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 am. Lunch will be served in the church hall after the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Calumet Area in his memory. www.hospicecalumet.org
