Born on July 27, 1971, in Kankakee, IL, Jim spent the first several years of his life in nearby Momence, IL, before moving to Schererville, IN.
Jim attended Lake Central High School, graduating in 1989, where his sharp wit and easy laugh made him a magnet for lifelong friendships. Jim began his college career at his beloved Indiana University. But his passion for flying took him to Spartan College of Aeronautics & Technology, where he earned his private pilot's license, igniting a lifelong love of the skies.
Jim went on to Lewis University, where he joined the Delta Sigma Pi fraternity and gained even more enduring friendships. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Economics, embarking on a successful career in the financial sector. Over the years, Jim held roles at the Chicago Stock Exchange, eTrade, the National Stock Exchange, and NASDAQ, navigating the fast-paced financial world with his characteristic charm.
For 19 years, Jim was married to Marlene, with whom he shared many memories and a blended family. He was a loving father to his daughter, Shannon, and a devoted stepfather to Dylan and Connor Scott.
Outside of work and family, Jim was a man of many passions. He loved riding 4-wheelers through muddy trails, collecting rare coins, experimenting in the kitchen as a passionate home chef, and blasting music from bands like the Foo Fighters and Bon Jovi. He was also a loyal Chicago sports fan, cheering enthusiastically for the Bears, Cubs, and Blackhawks through thick and thin.
Above all, Jim cherished his role as a father. His conversations with Shannon—whether deep and thought-provoking or hilariously offbeat—were among the highlights of his life. His humor, wisdom, and unconditional love will leave an indelible mark on her heart.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Shannon; his stepsons, Dylan (Caroline) Scott and Connor (Natalie) Scott; his three sisters, Tina, Colleen (Brian), and Mary; three precious grandchildren, Lainey, Maverick, and Liam; niece Alexis and nephews Blake & Devon; and countless friends and family members who will forever remember his adventurous spirit, big heart, and contagious laughter. He is preceded in death by his father, Stanley Bruner, and his mother, Janis Bruner.
Though Jim’s journey ended too soon, his legacy of embracing life’s moments—big and small—will endure. To honor him, cheer for a Chicago team, take a ride on a 4-wheeler, or cook something bold and memorable in his name.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 12:00-3:00pm at the Avalon Manor Banquet Center, 3550 E Lincoln Hwy, Merrillville IN 46410. In lieu of flowers, contributions to his daughter Shannon’s college education may be made via Venmo (@Shannon-Bruner-8).
