Linda Karen Canan
August 1, 1944 – January 15, 2020
Linda Karen Canan, age 75 passed away on January 15, 2020 in her Munster home surrounded by her loved ones.
Linda was born on August 1, 1944, the youngest daughter of Gladys Myrtle Irene(Jenkins) and Edward Robert DeVries in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from CVS High School, Chicago, Illinois in May 1962 with a degree in Stenography and married her true love, Jack Richard Canan of Chicago, Illinois on December 8, 1962.
She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Jack Richard Canan, her daughter Cheryl Lynne Cheek, her husband Stephen Craig Cheek and her Grandson, Jeffrey Allen Oskierko, son, Jack Douglas Canan, wife Diane Canan and granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Canan, son, Daniel Edward Canan and wife, Jennifer Canan and grandchildren Logan Daniel Canan and Dylan Trevor Canan and many relatives and true friends.
She is preceded in death by her Mother, Gladys Myrtle Irene (Jenkins) Bender and father, Edward Robert Devries, step-father Elmer (Al) Bender, her loving sissies, Beverly Ann Jennings, Marilyn Joy Johnson, brother Edward Robert (Bud/Buddy) DeVries and nephews Dale Johnson & Donny Jennings.
Linda Karen Canan. The matriarch of the Canan Family. She sang & danced to the beat of her own drum...& didn’t give one “iota” (as she would say) to who was around. You know those people that just feel like home when you’re in their presence? Linda was that person. Linda took so much pride in every single thing she did. She mastered every single logic puzzle you would give her. Knew every single Elvis Presley song word for word. Dr. Pepper could solve any problem...she insisted. She was an avid publishers clearing house participant determined to be presented with that giant sized check. As Ma would say, "hey, it could happen!". Linda lived for taking care of other people...always. She was the most selfless individual you’d ever meet. Everyone confided in Linda & felt safe around her presence. Linda never put herself first, ever. She took pride in her family, friends, cooking & home. No matter if she was having visitors or not. Linda always reminded us, “you can never have enough decorations or magnets.” She was truly the female Clark Griswold...only she celebrated a “holiday” or had a “theme” for every single month.
Her love & energy for Da Cubs, Da Bears, Bulls & Blackhawks could never ever be forgotten. As she would always shout throughout the house, “ALRIGHT NOW, SHOW ME SOME ENTHUSIASM!!!!”
Her laugh was contagious. Her smile radiated. She had a timeless presence that cannot be forgotten.
How can you possibly sum up a person in just a few short paragraphs who meant so much to so many people?
Linda lived her life exactly the way she wanted to. She was fierce, prideful, determined & hardworking in every single aspect of her life.
In a world full of trends...Linda aka Honey or Ma, remained a classic.

Friends are invited to meet with the family on Friday, January 24, 2020 from 12:00-4:00 PM at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 8178 Cline Avenue Crown Point, IN.
A Memorial Service will follow at 4:00 PM with Rev. Mark Wilkins officiating.
