Marie was diagnosed with Leukemia in July of 2018. She fought long and hard. She was truly a warrior. She suffered a stroke during her initial chemo treatment. She endured many other obstacles throughout the remainder of her illness, and she overcame many of them. She wasn’t going down without a fight. Her cancer doctor even told her that no one had fought harder than she did. After her courageous battle, Marie passed away peacefully in her home, with her family by her side. She may have lost the battle but, in our eyes and hearts, she was a hero 'til the very end.
She was preceeded in death by her mother, Susan Bartak.
Marie is survived by her husband, Kenneth Kidd; her father, Joseph Yonker; her children, Michael Brandenburg, Johnathan Brandenburg (Kelli), and Brian Brandenburg (Allison). Her stepchildren, Joseph Kidd (Marie), Kenneth Kidd, Jr. (Amanda), and Peggy Cordova (Bryan). Her brothers, John Yonker (Patricia) and Patrick Yonker; her only sister, Crystine Gomez (Oscar). Her grandchildren, Noah, Johanna, Andrew, Anais, Ariya, Jonah, Wesley, Lillian, Augustus, Ruby, Logan, Lucas, AJ and Julien. Her nephews, Alexander (Katherine), Christopher (Janessa), Timothy (Marisela), Michael and Liam. Her great-nieces, Aviana, Adelina, Alondra. She also leaves three fur babies behind, Eli, Daisy and Squirt.
Born in East Chicago, IN, Marie was the eldest of her siblings. She was just shy of turning 63 in April. In her younger days, she used to help out her mother with her ceramic classes. She married young, and had her three children from that marriage. She worked as a waitress for many years at Mike’s Restaurant in Calumet City. This is where she met one of her best friends, Birdie. She and Birdie were two peas in a pod. (Birdie also has earned her wings and will be welcoming Marie with open arms). She attended Purdue University Calumet for a couple of years, studying psychology. Marie started attending the Nazarene Church where she was introduced to the love of her life, Kenny. They married in 2000. During their years together, Marie was a stay-at-home mom for a while but, eventually, started her own embroidery business, customizing embroidery on pretty much everything. She also became an avid quilter. She loved making things for her grandchildren. She eventually became very involved in the church and would conduct sewing classes in the basement up until the start of her illness. She loved camping and being in the outdoors. Her and Kenny would always pack up the camper and load up the animals and take them with. Marie leaves behind many friends and family. She will forever be in our hearts. We will cherish our memories of her. A piece of her lives on in her children and grandchildren.
Special thanks to the Hospice of the Calumet Area, Munster, IN.
