He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Mary Crane (nee Peters); his daughters, Terri (Thomas) Kopanda, Melinda Sue (John) Rosaschi, and Allison Crane; his grandchildren, Kristian (Lauren Davis) Kopanda, Melissa (Frank) Mikolajczyk, Melanie (Daniel) Winchell, and Keith Kopanda; and his great-grandchildren, Faith, Aaron, Brooklyn, Daniel, and Drew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Grace Crane; and siblings, Wilbur, Don, Bob, and Marilyn.
Russell cherished the friendships he formed, especially on the golf course at Wicker Park, where he enjoyed many rounds with his dear friends, Richie Morales and Joe Buksar. He was a proud alumnus of T.F. North High School, where he lettered in varsity track. Russ served his country with honor in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He worked as a meat cutter for A&P and as a custodian for the School Town of Highland.
A man of many talents and passions, Russ had a deep love for music. He entertained his family on his saxophone, electric piano, and guitar. His beloved RCA stereo often filled the house with the sounds of country, jazz, gospel, pop, rock, and R&B. His zest for life and devotion to his family were truly remarkable.
A visitation in honor of Russell will take place on Monday, November 25, 2024, at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307, beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a short service at 12:00 PM. He will be laid to rest at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Russ will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
