Tom met his future wife, Jennie, when they both worked at the Chicago Tribune as a copy boy and a copy girl. He was a military veteran, serving his country in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He protected many as a Chicago Police Officer and Hit and Run Detective, much like the men Glavin had met before him. After that, he worked as a Circulation Manager for the Pointer Economist Newspaper. Tom loved all sports, especially baseball and the Chicago White Sox. While working for the newspaper, he wrote a sports trivia column called Tom’s Sports Trivia.
Retiring in his middle fifties, he enjoyed time with Jennie and his family. They eventually moved to Florida and spent great times at the Tampa Bay Race Track and the Oldsmar Flea Market. Alcoholics Anonymous was of extreme importance to him as he followed the steps in his daily life. He spent the last 46 years a sober man, sponsoring and helping many men and women and making life-long friends for both him and Jennie. Their faith in God carried them through the struggles and hardships of life.
He was preceded in death by his devoted and adoring wife of 53 years, Jennie; his sweet daughter, Kathleen; his only son, Tommy; his loyal father, Harold; his precious mother, Clara; and his faithful sisters, Margaret and Claire. Tom is survived by six daughters, Colleen (James, deceased), Mary (Tim), Elizabeth (Jerry), Jennifer (Jeff), Patricia (Steve), and Annie (Randy); 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Bernie (Sondra) and Richard (Diann); countless nephews and nieces; and his trusted dog, Taffy.
