Virginia was born in East Chicago, Indiana on September 22, 1924 to Samuel and Gizella (Jakush) Christoff. She graduated from East Chicago Washington High School in 1942 and continued to work at the high school office as a secretary, known as “Miss Ginia” to her students. Virginia married Dave Kanyer of Rosylyn Washington, in East Chicago on October 25, 1952. They later moved to Munster in 1960 where they raised two sons: Brian (Meg) Kanyer of Michigan City and Drew (Sheri) Kanyer of Mequon Wisconsin. Throughout her life Virginia remained an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Hammond, The Munster Women’s Club, and the East Chicago Washington High School Alumni Association. She was preceded in death by Dave in 2011, and she is survived by her sons and grandchildren: Sarah (Nate) Plooster, Amy Kanyer, Andy Kanyer, and Abby Kanyer.
Gramma Ginia’s family knew her as a loving and generous wife, mother and grandmother who was also known for her cooking, baking, and housekeeping skills. She could create awesome molasses cookies while removing any stain from any article of clothing. While she was always quick to provide her opinion on any topic, she truly loved her family and friends, and she will be missed by all. She was a gift.
In place of flowers, the family has requested that any donations be made to Harbor Light Hospice, 1841 E. Summit St. Crown Point, In 46307, which provided wonderful care to Virginia prior to her passing.
Visitation will be held on January 10, 2015 from 10:30-11:30 followed by a memorial service for both Dave and Virginia at Chapel Lawns Memorial Gardens in Schererville.
