Bill was born in Slidell, Texas, on June 28, 1941, to Otto and Dorothy Dimitt. He grew up in his birthplace of Slidell and eventually graduated from Slidell High School. During his High School years, Bill excelled as a varsity basketball player and devoted time to helping his parents on their family farm.
Upon graduation, Bill was very excited at the chance to leave for college and pursue his higher education. In short order, Bill earned both his bachelor’s degree and an MBA from the University of North Texas. After receiving his MBA, Bill even worked toward his doctorate, as he attended the University of Arizona and completed a significant portion of the coursework toward a Ph.D. in business.
Leaning on the work ethic that he established as a child and on his success in college, Bill then experienced a great career in the financial industry. Bill spent his early years at Southwestern Life Insurance Company, where he learned about insurance and banking. From there, he established and managed numerous investment programs and was in leadership at multiple banks. As a tribute to his contributions and leadership, Bill held high-ranking titles at numerous institutions during the final 2 decades of his career. In particular, Bill was a Senior Vice President at First State Bank of Texas for many years and then was a Senior Vice President at Compass Bank until his retirement in 2005.
In his free time, Bill was a member of the Dallas Chapter of Who’s Who International. He also enjoyed golfing and genealogy and was a loyal fan of the University of Arizona Wildcat Basketball. However, if asked, Bill’s friends and family will tell you that his greatest claim to fame was his “Dimitt Luck.” He loved making trips to Winstar, where he would usually return with a story of a big win. The power of this Dimitt Luck once even resulted in him winning $100,000 on a Texas lottery scratch-off. While all of this paints the picture of a full life, Bill’s greatest sources of pride were his children and grandchildren. He was lovingly called “Boompa” by all of the grandkids, and he was a constant fixture at their sporting events, recitals, plays, and programs.
Bill was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Mabel Dimitt and Roy and Nannie Gentle, and by his parents, Otto and Dorothy Dimitt.
His memory will be celebrated and cherished by his daughter, Holley Themer, and husband Will; by his son, Steven Dimitt, and wife Emily; by his 3 grandchildren, Kherington Themer, Sadie Dimitt, and Michael Dimitt; by his ex-wife and mother of his children, Sherri Dimitt; and by his significant other, Ann Parker.
The family wishes to thank Mr. Robert McGowan, of Cerna Homecare, for the devoted care and great company that he provided to Bill during his final months.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bill’s life through a memorial service, which will be held at Faith Chapel at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas, at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.
