Carl was born on October 16, 1921 in Reading, Pennsylvania to Carl and Lillian Smith. He grew up in Reading and graduated with merit from Reading High School in 1939. After graduation he went to work for General Electric in Reading while attending Penn State.
In June 1942, Carl enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet. He graduated flight school in 1943 as a Qualified Multi-Engine Pilot with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. While serving at the Navigation Training School in Monroe, Louisiana, he met the love of his life Mevaleen Crotts, while convalescing in a hospital ward. Carl and Mevaleen were married six short weeks later in April 1944 and were married for almost 70 years before her passing. They had one daughter, Peggy, born in 1945, whom they loved dearly. Shortly after Peggy’s birth Carl was transferred to Liberal, Kansas where he became a B-24 Commander and was forming a crew for service in the Pacific when the war ended. He was discharged in October 1945.
After the war Carl returned to work at GE in Reading. He left GE in 1964 after 25 years of service which saw him rise from Clerk to District Sales Manager. His work took him from Reading on to Allentown, Philadelphia and New Orleans. Shortly after that he joined Magnavox as the Regional Sales Manager of Louisiana and Mississippi. In 1971 Carl and Mevaleen moved to Atlanta with his promotion to Division General Manager of their seven state Southeast Division. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1984.
Carl and Mevaleen lived in Dunwoody, Georgia for 35 years entertaining many friends, family and then their extended families. In 2006 they moved to Dallas, Texas to be closer to their daughter.
Carl was the consummate gentleman doing anything and everything for his wife and family. We will miss his gentle presence and guidance in our live but will remember so many of his wonderful stories.
