The Hawke family greatly loved and deeply misses Mary Hawke who passed on to heaven on March 3. 2022. Mary was the daughter of Bob and Adeline House and was born on November 7, 1934, in Kimball, Nebraska. Her father specialized in highway and bridge projects which involved several family moves – which helped Mary in similar relocations after marriage to Tom Hawke.
Mary attended the University of Nebraska and majored in Elementary Education. She started college in 1952 where she met her future husband at the Freshman Dance Mixer. They dated on and off until their engagement in 1954. In college, she was involved in numerous activities both for her sorority and school. She was elected Home Coming Queen in 1954. Tom and Mary were married in 1956.
In Cincinnati, Ohio, Mary taught 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. While teaching, she decided she wanted to become a counselor and she enrolled in the Master’s program at the University of Cincinnati. She then started her counseling career in both public offices and church settings. She also began teaching adult Sunday school classes.
When Tom retired from the General Electric Company in 1994, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Mary continued her church counseling on a nearly full-time basis. She was asked to be a speaker for the Phoenix Christian Women’s Club and especially enjoyed these opportunities.
Mary and Tom had three children, their eldest daughter Janet who resides in Seattle, Washington, their middle daughter Micki who resides in Arlington, Texas, and their youngest daughter Ann who resides in Clinton, Tennessee.
In 2010, Mary and Tom moved to Highland Springs to be closer to their middle daughter, Micki, and her family. They both became Gideons shortly after the move.
Mary was a wonderful Christian woman, a great wife and mother, and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Mary on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 2PM at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home located on 7990 President George Bush Turnpike, Dallas, TX 75252.
