I shared the news the same time as David Newton as I am his wife of, soon to be, 43 years.  However, the difference is that I knew Patrick Lowry from the earliest days of Longview Elementary School and then through high school as well.  It was sad to learn of his passing.  He was such a little character in grade school with that impish grin of his.  He did his share of teasing us girls. It was good to hear that he grew into such a wonderful man.  I wish I had also known him then.

I was leaving my home located on top of a rocky hill this morning and encountered a woman with a geologist's hammer.  We chatted and I learned that she is a geology teacher at the local community college, which got me thinking . . . what is Pat Lowry up to?  I was saddened to find his obituary.  Pat and I attended high school together for four years, we often had classes together but did not develop any special bond.  Next stop:  Arizona State University Elements of Business Enterprise class.  Pat and I sat together in class and he expressed excitement about joining a fraternity and majoring in business to continue operating the insurance company founded by his father.  Fast forward a few weeks.  The luster of the fraternity has worn off; he has quit it.  We are both struggling to commute to ASU for 7:30AM classes 5-days per week.  Pat has looked into getting a dorm room, a few are still available, would I be interested in sharing a room with him?  And so, we were roommates for the remainder of our freshman year.  Oh, and by the way, we also shared a Physical Geology 101 class that first semester in college.  There was clearly a light bulb moment when it occurred to Pat that he could have a career that incorporated his passion for exploring the outdoors, he switched majors and the rest is history.  I'm pleased to see that Pat lived a very fulfilling life surrounded by a loving family.  Rest in peace my friend.

It is a great shock and sadness... I had an honour and privilege to work and communicate with Patrick for several years... If I may offer my belated condolences and sorrow now to Patrick's family, colleagues and friends..Mr. Patrick H. Lowry was a dedicated Professional with a capital 'P'! He was highly valued, liked and  respected by all...One of the most likable persons I have ever met in my whole life, kind, sincere, so intelligent and delicate (sometimes even shy)), respecting, with a great sense of humour. Patrick had that rare quality of boyishness at his level of professional accomplishment and corporate responsibility.. I never dared to call him my Friend..

Dear Carol,
I feel so embarrassed that I did not know about Patrick's passing until today. I had had lunch with him last fall but had not exchanged e-mail with him since then. I had worked with Patrick at Scotia and we had a really memorable trip to Santiago, Chile together then. Since then we always saw each other at various events and kept abreast of our activities.
Patrick had told me about his heart attack a couple of years ago but when I saw him he appeared full of his usual energy. He was always willing to help, and was so considerate and kind. His passion for science was very inspiring.  I will miss him.

I worked with Patrick the last few years at Denbury.  Few people in my career have showed the kind of passion that Patrick did for his job, and few have been such a pleasure to work with.  His friendship will be dearly missed.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Patrick was such a joy to work with!  He was passionate about being a Geologist, and being a Geologist myself, I can relate to that!  He always treated everyone with respect and dignity, no matter what their level, even though he was always way ahead of us! I can remember that he would always get excited when someone he worked with would have an "AHA" moment and finally understand what he was saying; because he was so far ahead and could think so fast, it was hard for us to keep up with him!  But I also admired his patience!  He will be greatly missed, and we are all definitely better for having known him, and having worked together with him.  My prayers are with you all.

Dear Carol,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this sad time.  Although I have only worked with Patrick for a couple of years, I will miss his gregarious spirit.  Life in the office was never boring with Patrick around.  His ability to tell stories was great; I especially enjoyed hearing stories about adventurous weekends and vacations.  It was obvious that Patrick wore his love of life on his sleeve and lived life to the fullest.  He was a great teacher and enjoyed sharing his knowledge.  I am grateful that Patrick has been a part of my Denbury life and I will always remember the time that I worked with him.  Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dearest Carol, Kevin, and Steven,
My heart goes out to you in your time of sorrow. Pat was such as awesome brother-in-law and I truly enjoyed our phone chats from afar. I will never forget Pat and the boys quad riding across our the beach in Cholla Bay and Grandma Lowry feeding the seagulls. The image is crystal clear, all these years later. And the wonderful geology discussions on our Thanksgiving trip on the Verde Valley train when Steven was just a tot on your lap. He spoke so much of his love of family, the joy he found in sailing and in his work and travel and the satisfaction of being a good father to his sons. 
With thoughtful prayers for you and your family in these difficult times. May each day's new dawn, lighten your burden a bit.
