Quinton grew up on a farm near Palm Valley, a Swedish community. Yes, Quinton was a Hutto Hippo. He met the love of his life, Martha Ann Haschke, at Texas Lutheran College. In 1952, they married, and Quinton (nicknamed “Swede”) graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Agronomy. He was a proud member and Parliamentarian of the Agronomy Society. After graduation, he enlisted and served two years in the Army at Camp Rucker, Alabama.
Following his service in the Army, Quinton began a respected 51-year career serving the golf industry (from 1954-2005). He began as a salesman for Goldthwaite’s selling Toro golf course equipment from 1954-1962. In 1962, Quinton became a Golf Course Superintendent with the City of Fort Worth at Meadowbrook GC. In 1964, Robert Dedman Sr., founder of ClubCorp, hired Quinton to become the Golf Course Superintendent over all three courses at Brookhaven CC, which became one of the largest country clubs in the United States. Quinton remained at Brookhaven CC when he became the Golf Course Consulting and Purchasing Director at ClubCorp until he retired in 2005.
During his tenure at Brookhaven CC, Quinton hired and trained 55 men and women in the Turfgrass Management Industry, a community proudly referred to as Quinton’s “Pups.” Forty of those Quinton took under his wing became Golf Course Superintendents and one became a Golf Course Architect. Quinton served as President of the Texas Turfgrass Association and President of the North Texas Golf Course Superintendents Association.
Quinton was proud of his 20+ years as a volunteer at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. Under Quinton’s leadership and solicitation, a putting green and tee were constructed and subsequently maintained with funds raised and labor hours donated. This putting green has provided the opportunity for physically disabled young people to be exposed to and participate in golf in a way that was previously unavailable to them and is viewed as an invaluable part of each patient’s therapy by Hospital staff and family members.
Quinton was a true gentleman, a man of faith and devoted family man. Quinton is survived by his children, Roland (Cindy) Johnson, and Karla Evans. Quinton’s six grandchildren are: Wes (Laura), Daniel, Ben (Lindsey), Martha (Josh), Gracie, and Katie; and his eight great-grandchildren are: Jayden, Ellis, Lucas, Gwen, Jake, Avery, Chloe, and Owen.
The celebration of life service will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Carrollton at 4000 Midway Road, Carrollton, Texas 75007 on Thursday, September 18, at 11 a.m.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas or to a youth group of your choice.
