Born on June 16, 1939, Robert lived a life defined by devotion to family, service to country, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of nature and community. He met the love of his life, Christine, on a blind date—a chance encounter that blossomed into a marriage just seven months later. Together they built a family grounded in love and laughter, raising two daughters, Delaney and Kathryn, who were the pride of his life.
Robert’s early years were marked by athletic excellence. He swam for Sewanee: The University of the South, earning a place in the school’s Hall of Fame. His adventurous spirit carried into his passions for boating, flying, and golf. Yet he was equally known for his gentleness—feeding neighborhood squirrels and raccoons, rescuing turtles, and his beloved dachshund, Luffer.
His life of service was shaped by his time in the United States Air Force, where he endured the hardships of being a prisoner of war. That experience instilled in him a profound commitment to the Prisoner of War community, where he became a passionate advocate and supporter. After his military service, Robert pursued his profession as a pilot with Southwest Airlines, continuing to soar through the skies with skill and grace.
Though stoic and reserved by nature, Robert had a gift for humor. When he chose to share a joke, his wit could light up a room and bring joy to all who were present. His family and friends will forever cherish those moments of laughter, alongside the quiet strength and steadfastness that defined his character.
Robert leaves behind his beloved wife Christine, his daughters Delaney and Kathryn, and his cherished grandchildren Noah and Christian Friend. He is also survived by his nieces Traci Peel, Mary Martha Bahn, Elizabeth Peel Lee, and Katherine Peel, as well as his nephew John Peel. His legacy of integrity, courage, and love will live on in the hearts of his family, the community he served, and the countless lives he touched with kindness and compassion.
