MASON, Roy Carrington, of Plano, TX, formerly of Alexandria, VA and Robinson, IL, passed away March 5, 2017 at the Juliette Fowler Community with his family by his side. He was born March 4, 1924 to Herman and Mary Jane (Gilliland) Mason, and spent his formative years in Brookneal, VA alongside his 7 siblings. World War II broke out and he entered the navy, where he served as a signalman on a merchant marine vessel running munitions to Europe across the North Atlantic. Following the war, he settled in Alexandria, VA where he was employed with the Coca Cola Bottling Company for many years. Because of a notorious miscue poolside at their apartment building Roy met his wife, Jean, with whom he would share 55 years of marriage. He was swatting at a fly and she thought he was waving to her. Jean walked over to say hello and the rest is history. They were married February 25, 1961. Roy joined L.S. Heath and Sons (Heath Candy) shortly thereafter. He loved every minute of his professional career as a proud “Candyman”, always telling anyone who would listen that he had “the sweetest job in town!” In 1963 they welcomed their son Carrington. As responsibility increased professionally, the family relocated to Robinson, IL, home of Heath Candy, in 1970. Roy served many roles within the company, always in sales. His personable manner and quick joke served him well in these endeavors. In 1974, the family moved to Plano, TX in order to serve with greater ease his national responsibility for the company. He loved travelling and constantly being in a new place. (We now refer to this as ADD!) Upon his retirement, he and Jean spent their days in service to others, providing companionship and transport to medical appointments for elder church members. In December of 2015, Jean passed away. In recent years dementia robbed Roy of some memories, but his love of people, his family, and a quick joke never waned. He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Mary Jane Mason, Sisters, Belle Francis and Effie Blanks, as well as brothers Thornton Mason, Tonchie Mason, and Robert Mason. His son Dr Carrington Mason, daughter in law Kari Ewing Mason, and his beloved grandson Brennan Mason survive him. Also surviving are his sister, June White (Al White) of Lynchburg, VA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to acknowledge the tremendous care given to Roy by Dr. William S. Howard, the dedicated teams at the Juliet Fowler Community, Methodist Dallas Hospital, and his former in home caregivers Donna, Jackline, Anne, and Ednah.
“Fantastic! Never been better!” He never had a bad day in 93 years and one day.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like you to consider a charitable contribution to Methodist Hospital Foundation. (https://foundation.methodisthealthsystem.org/donate or by calling 214-947-4555)
