Gary attended schools in McFarland and Bakersfield, making many lifelong friends. His step father, Dick Kitchen, taught him the grocery business. He joined the Navy in 1952 serving in the Pacific. After discharge, he worked as a television repairman and a land leveler for his cousin Don Cupp. Gary and partner, Terry Ingram, bought that business naming it "P & I Earth Moving."
Gary, Doug Eberlein and Ed Snyder bought a boat in Mexico and enjoyed many fishing trips. He played golf with Jim Salmon and the Coffee Club group. He loved go cart racing, taking flying lessons, fishing and backpacking on horses with buddies. Long time Delano Elk members, Bill Hunter and Gary would meet often to discuss cars, motorcycles, new gadgets and the latest political news.
Die hard 49er fan, Gary's Bar and Restaurant opened in 1983, hosting many football games, especially Rams vs. 49ers games. Retiring in 1996 due to health reasons, he moved to Bakersfield with his long time partner, Marilyn Clark. Nascar became his passion when he wasn't watching politics on Fox News.
