Today, August 1, is Aunt Ruby’s birthday. Aunt Ruby was a wonderful person - kind, gracious, generous, vivacious and fun-loving. She was always interested in what I was doing and ready to listen during my growing-up years in DeQuincy. Aunt Ruby took a special interest in the important events in my life. She hosted a birthday luau for me, a graduation party at the rec center and my wedding reception at their home.

Our family shared many great times with Aunt Ruby, Uncle Howard, Marcia, Lee and Van. I remember many delicious meals together with them at our homes, shopping trips to Lake Charles and Beaumont, trips to Ann’s and Henry’s camp on Big Lake, weekends at Six Flags in Dallas, visits to their camp at Toledo Bend, even a trip to New Orleans many years ago while Uncle Howard was in dental school at Loyola. 

Aunt Ruby was always beautifully and stylishly dressed in the latest fashions and she loved shoes. I remember she wore the first “springalators” (backless high heels) I’d ever seen. She had many hats but a special one was a beautiful white mink hat with a large jewel in the center which she let me wear when I was on the homecoming court my junior year. 

When I went to LSU, I wanted to become a Phi Mu, just like Aunt Ruby. She let me wear her Phi Mu pin encrusted with rubies while at LSU and I even followed in her footsteps to become president of the LSU chapter.

Aunt Ruby told me that when I was a toddler, before she had children, she’d sometimes take me on little outings with her and pretend I was hers. Although I don’t remember those times, I’ve always felt especially close to Aunt Ruby. She was a very special aunt and I cherish the many wonderful memories she gave me.

Ruby was such a classy lady.  I’ll never forget her warm smile.   Now she is sharing Heaven with Dr. Howard!  Looking forward to seeing them again.

Just to know that Ruby and Howard Snider were Icons in my life. Wonderful people wonderful family. I am thankful to have known  and had influence of these people and will always cherish their Memory.

Sorry for your loss. She raised such a beautiful family.  Such a loss to the community.  Great lady!!!

Ruby is survived by her sons, Dr. Van Snider (Dr. Lisa) of Lake Charles, Dr. Lee Snider (Angie) of Lake Charles; daughter, Marcia Snider Hammock (David/deceased) of DeQuincy; grandchildren, Amy Hammock and Tyler Hammock, Caitlin Snider and Austin Snider (Tressa), Lauren Snider, Melissa Snider Smith (Cameron); and great-grandchildren, Carter Snider and Avery Claire Snider. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Dr. Howard Lee Snider, Sr.; her parents, William T. Brown and Sarah Myrtle Brown; and her brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Betty Lou Brown.
