Howard was raised and spent his life near his large extended family in DeWitt, Michigan.
A graduate of DeWitt High School, Howard enjoyed a long and successful career as an Electrician working for IBEW and UAW before retiring and spending his time with his family. He enjoyed working outdoors all his life, building, and selling a number of his own houses in the DeWitt area. Howard had a passion for nature and for the afforestation of his land. He possessed a deep understanding of all varieties of pine trees and had a particular affection for Catalpa trees.
Howard was recognized among his family, neighbors and the larger community as a man who was happy to lend his strength and skill to help others. If we, as his loved ones, know anything of integrity we learned it from watching him.
A recreational outdoorsman, Howard was most likely to walk home from a hunt with a smile and a peaceful mind rather than the object of the hunt. We suspect the deer and turkeys watched him as much as he watched them.
Howard was married to LaDonna Lee Shooltz for over 50 years, raising two children and building their life. He is survived by LaDonna, his son Dean Shooltz (Katie Layman), his daughter Tracy (Josh) Matula and grandson Benjamin Joseph Matula. Siblings, Arlene, Dorothy, Clifford and Beverly.
A celebration of life will be held on Oct. 28, 2023 from 3-7 p.m. at VFW Post 671, 12250 Old US 27, DeWitt, MI 48820.
