

She was predeceased by her mother, Thelma Stoneburner Wilder; and her father, Claud Wilder. Joan’s siblings, who also predeceased her, include Myrtie Hough, June Freeman, and Don Wilder. Joan has one surviving brother, Gordon Wilder, who lives in Merrillville, Indiana. Joan’s stepchildren include Gordon Douglas Brown (Donna), Steven Ray Brown (Amy), and Judy Lynn Farrigan; grandchildren, Melissa Cole (Charlie), Sarah Brown, Heather Brown, Trevor Brown, and Chelsea Brown; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Brian, Jada, Brianna, and Jaxon. Joan was loved by many nieces, nephews, and her caregiver and special friend, Michelle Gilhouse.
She married her beloved Gordon Ray Brown on September 22nd, 1972, and enjoyed 43 years of loving companionship with him, before he predeceased her in 2015.
Joan graduated from Eastern High School, class of 1949 in Lansing, Michigan. She enjoyed reading extensively and developed a heightened insight into many subjects. She excelled in theatrical acting and developed a beautiful singing voice and sang in many choirs. Joan was also a writer, and teacher, and performed for public and church audiences. Her occupation as a nurse enabled her to give compassion and strength to many patients. She became a minister in the Community of Christ Church, where she served her family, friends, and congregants in the office of Elder. Joan was highly respected for her wisdom and insight. Her sermons were anticipated and appreciated by her church. She did not take lightly the responsibility of sharing her knowledge, experience, and wisdom. She led a full, rich life, pursuing her interests and hobbies. She was full of kindness, wisdom, and a never-ending quest for knowledge and answers to the unknown. Joan was deeply spiritual leading her life faithfully as a minister and servant of God.
A memorial service to honor Joan Wilder Brown will be held on Saturday, October 29 at 11:00 am at the St. Johns’ Community of Christ Church, 310 N. Whittemore Street, St. Johns, MI 48879.
