Lansing, MI
Lois was born to Jacob Earl and Mabel Whearley Brandenburg in Attica, Indiana on March 7, 1926, grew up and flourished in the vibrant Detroit of the 1930s and ‘40s, and moved to the Lansing area as a young wife and mother. Lois was a warm, gracious, outgoing woman who loved to laugh. She made friends easily and had many. She was an extraordinary mother: loving and indulgent, but with high expectations. She was good at every one of the many jobs she held throughout her life. She was an excellent driver, played a mean game of Scrabble, and baked the best pasties this side of the Mackinac Bridge. Once her children were grown, Lois enjoyed traveling, both outside of and within the United States. She was particularly fond of Alaska, which she visited many times – even steering her Oldsmobile station wagon through the challenging terrain of the Canadian Rockies to get there while in her 60s. In more recent years she spent vacations relaxing at her second home in the Upper Peninsula. Lois died peacefully at her home in DeWitt Township on April 24, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, son Brian, and brother, Forrest Brandenburg. Survivors include: daughter, Rita; sons, Ralph (Veronica) and Glenn (Brenda); grandsons, Ryan (Kayce), James (Denise), and Alex; great-grandchildren, William, Kayla, Ethan, and Brianna; former daughter-in-law, Renee Stevenson; and special sister-in-law and friend of nearly 70 years, Norma (Wilbur) Youngquist. A graveside service will be held at Hurd Cemetery, 14874 S. DeWitt Road, Dewitt on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 205 E. Washington, DeWitt Chapel on Thursday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the graveside service.
