Lucy Agnes Hersey

Lucy A. Hersey went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. She was born on November 19, 1939, in Philadelphia, PA to the late Robert S. and Dorothy D’Amelio. Lucy is survived by her daughters Dorothy Rice (Joe) and Ellen Simmons (Adam), by her grandchildren, Julia, Annelise, Andrew, and Emma; along with her sister Agnes Colligan (the late James), and brother Robert D’Amelio (Diane); and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard and her stepmother Louise Hobach, with whom she shared a special bond.

Lucy attended Immaculata High School in Detroit and graduated from St. Mary’s in Lansing. She went on to attend Michigan State University and became a lifelong Spartan fan. Lucy had fond memories of attending Lions and Tigers games with her dad and continued to be a loyal fan throughout her life. Lucy worked as an employee and a manager in the State of Michigan’s Highway Department. In 1971, she met the love of her life, Richard Hersey, with whom she shared 49 wonderful years. Lucy was a devoted mother and homemaker who was involved in her daughters’ activities. She volunteered her time as a Girl School Leader, Religious Education teacher, Band Booster, and Parish Council member, along with other school-related activities. She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection and more recently, the Catholic Community of St. Jude. Lucy loved cooking, baking with her grandchildren, and decorating her home festively for holidays. Lucy was an avid bridge player, playing with the same group of women for over 50 years. She enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and rooting for them at their sporting events and activities. She was a loving and selfless woman who will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 12 at 12:00 pm at the Catholic Community of St. Jude in DeWitt. A viewing will be one hour prior to the service. A graveside service will occur at Dewitt Cemetery, 780 N. Bridge St, Dewitt, MI 48820.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Lucy’s name.
