She was born on August 3, 1943, in Lansing, Michigan, to Harold and Jewel Hein. Marlene graduated from Lansing Sexton High School in 1961 and went on to live a life full of adventure, independence, and unforgettable experiences. After high school, she moved to California, where she worked for Mooney Oil and modeled part-time. During this exciting chapter of her life, she met Elvis Presley, and the two became friends—he affectionately nicknamed her “Blondie,” a story she carried with her for years.
Marlene later returned to Michigan, where she worked as a secretary at the Michigan State Capitol for several years before beginning a long and dedicated career with General Motors in 1977. She retired after 30 years of service, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment.
A woman of deep and unwavering faith, Marlene’s love for the Lord was the foundation of her life. She not only carried that faith in her own heart, but made it a guiding light for her family, teaching her sons and grandchildren—and great-grandchildren—to know, love, and trust in God. Her strength, resilience, and devotion were especially evident in the way she raised her two sons on her own, shaping their lives with love, guidance, and strong values.
Her greatest joy in life, however, was her family—especially her grandchildren: Dess Hull, Faelyn and Ava Ballbach. To say she was the best grandma is truly an understatement. She created a world of love, laughter, and learning for her grandchildren, and took pride in watching her family continue to grow with the addition of great-grandchildren. She spent countless hours at her beloved cottage on
Long Lake teaching them to snorkel, coloring together, practicing multiplication (always reminding them that 9 x 9 = 81), and showing them how to use a typewriter. Her home was filled with imagination and fun, bringing endless joy to the children she adored.
Marlene is survived by her son, Stephen (Sheena) Ballbach; her grandchildren, Dora Archer, Dess Hull, Faelyn, and Ava Ballbach; her brother, Gary (Nancy) Hein; many loving nieces and nephews; her great-grandchildren; and her best friend of over 50 years, Julie Teague.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Jewel Hein; her sister, Karen Hicks; and her son, Daniel Hull.
Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort in the love she gave so freely and the faith she instilled in all of us. Marlene’s warmth, laughter, and unwavering love will remain with us always, carried forward in every memory and in the lives she touched so deeply.
Private services will be held at a later date. Please share condolences for Marlene below.
