I'm living in Coldwater now, less than a mile from Brian and Amy. You'd be proud of him. He takes care of everything for me.
      I go to church with them each week and really enjoy it.  I miss you so, but I know I will see you again one day .... and you will see me, too.

I remember Tom fondly.  He made me laugh and always laughed at my dry remarks.  He always impressed me by what he could accomplish and how dedicated he was to his family. Life is short.  Live it with gusto as Tom did.

His friends were abundant, loyal and  true
for deep down inside they always knew
here was a man in who's trust they could confide
with just a quick call, he'd be by their side

Oh, I'm doing okay,
is what he always would say
but with you knowing it usually untrue
 for he always cared more for you

The subject would change to the kids or the nation
or a new project working on a kids house or addition
He worked like he was raised, with no dust under his feet
He'd always come help even when his heart was weak

For you and I, it was easy because we could see
for him it was fun to work circles around me
He saw with his heart and not with his eyes
not distracted by cosmetics and those other lies

He could tell by your voice, the reflection he'd say-
if you wanted to talk or just spend the day
We'd get lost in the woods for he was cutting down trees
Then we laughed so hard we'd fall to our knees                          He'd ride on the tractor as we mowed down the hay
"I'll watch for rocks," is what he always would say
He would throw more bales than five others could do
they'd just watch in amazement, confusion, envy, too

If ever there was a man who proved them all wrong
You wouldn't ever look past Tom for very long
His heart and his soul were the very best
His attitude and character passed every test

He had more struggles in life than you and me
But it's okay, because now he can see!

They say a friend is someone you can trust and who will be there when no one else will. They say a friend is someone you can confide in  who will do anything to make sure you're okay. They say that a friend gives you strength and energy when he takes you by the arm. Tom followed, while leading you in the right direction. 

Tom was my friend. Tom was my pal. We tried real hard not to tell on each other.

I'll never forget the call. 
As always, I was really glad it was Tom.

I'd hear that long - higher pitched, w-e-l-l - on the other end.      
What's wrong? 
I think I got turned around.
Where are you?         
I'm out back.
What are you doing?         
Waiting for you.        
No Tom, what were you doing?
Cutting wood.     
With a chain saw?

Tom was a husband, a father, a brother, a grandfather, a provider, a friend. He was a worker, a builder, a fixer, a cowboy, a farmer, an electrician, a plumber, a maintenance man, an engineer, a counselor, and a real inspiration to many. I was one of the fortunate people to have spent a lot of time with Tom. It's probably because I always needed his help.

Have you ever seen a blind man feed horses, take care of chickens? He would mow the grass, ride a horse, ride a bike, drive a horse and buggy, stack hay, shovel snow, build fences, paint a house, build barns, fix a transmission, and cane a chair.

On one of our long trips in the truck, we'd been talking about politics, and you all know what Tom thought about politics. In an effort to change the subject, I ask him what was the hardest thing for him about being blind. In all my stupidity, I expected his answer to be a fear of going out of the house with socks that didn't match or having to have to depend on someone else all the time. He said, every day he tried hard to remember what things looked like when he could see back in his 20's. That after all this time he said he'd forgotten a lot. He hesitated, and he broke down. After a minute he said, it's Connie. Connie?  It's having trouble remembering how beautiful she is.

You see, it was never about Tom. You drive, I'll watch for rocks! With Tom you'd never hit a rock.
Tom was blind only with his eyes. I think he felt way more than you or I will ever see.

Jesus, I know no one has to tell you this, but you got yourself a good one. You may have to keep an eye on him, but you got yourself a good one.  Go ahead, give him a tree.

This Easter day held an extra special meaning. We all know that because of Jesus ultimate sacrifice and resurrection your spirit lives forever and, in God's time, believing in Jesus we'll join you again. You continue to share the special moments in our lives. Praise God.

There are 2 extremely sad days for me out of the whole year. June 1st and December 28th. I miss you so much. When i found out that you passed away, I was so upset. I am sorry for your loss. I will always remember Mr. Van Zee from my time at First Baptist Church of DeWitt. God Bless you Mrs. Van Zee and family.

May happy memories carry you through this sorrowful time. Tom loved Busch Gardens, the rodeo and anything outside. His blindness was not a obstacle to his living life to the fullness.  Tom was one of a kind and will be missed greatly.

I worked with both Tom and Scott at LSJ, both very nice men. My heartfelt condolences to Scott and the rest of the Van Zee Family. May he R.I.P.

My heartfelt condolences. Tom had more vision than a lot of people with sight. He was always an inspiration to me. Heaven is a little brighter with his presence.

Connie and family, we are thinking of you.  So very sorry about Tom's passing.  He was an inspiration to so many of us in the park.  His riding, walking, etc. around the park was amazing, his eyesight didn't seem to hinder him.  He was one of a kind!! He will be missed---
