What a great person. I remember her laugh, her smile. Nan Joan. Loved her dearly and will never forget her.

I'm so sorry that Wanda and I could not attend Joan's funeral, she was a wondrful person helping anyone who needed a pic-me-up for a good reason.  Esp loved the bridge games with she and Chock for hrs hay or night.  We/ll miss her dearly.  Wanda and Rogers Dupre

Penguin, you know I love you bubby,my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Try not to be sad for too long because nothing can take away those good memories. Celebrate her life and be happy. I think that is what she would have wanted everyone to do.

Summertime…. As a preteen it was always a special time to me. It meant we would spend a few weeks at Granny's house. It meant early mornings working hard in the garden with Gramps, afternoons with cousins swimming in Uncle Bill's pool, but the part I enjoyed the most was the evenings with Granny.
 
It always began in the kitchen. There were vegetables to clean, we would sit and talk for hours it was an adventure. There was also the comfort of the classics, brown yard eggs, home made jellies, and real butter. I remember Abby eating “soda crackers” and butter. Well mostly butter. When she was young she would eat the butter off the cracker and then ask Granny to re-butter the cracker. Nothing was off limits for Granny. Then there were the bread and butter pickles and the sandwiches at lunch. A sandwich was never boring at Granny's it was home cooked ham, homemade mayonnaise, fresh tomatoes and on and on. Occasionally dinnertime was very interesting. There was something new in her culinary world for us to try. Her recipe cards and papers were well worn, dotted with the little stains of loving meals she had prepared through the years.
 
When the “Allons Manger” cookbook came out, she got the first page of the entrée' section. I was so proud of her. Actually… I was surprised that she was able to give a “formal” recipe.
 
Her cooking instructions to me usually went something like ….
First you make a roux
Add some onions and garlic
A little of this
A pinch of that
A squirt of this
Two or three shakes of that.
Simmer for 30 minutes.
When I asked how much onions, how much is a little of this or that, she would say until it looks right, smells right and tastes right. We would “taste” and sample the meal constantly as it was cooking. It was as if she was training my palate how to discern what was still needed. This began my love of cooking. I still cook the same way as she did and I also have the same difficulty passing my recipes along.
 
Then it was time to play games. Boggle, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit and Cards. Oh yes, cards. She had many new games to teach us over the years and she was a pro at every one of them. Cards were part of her DNA. To us it seemed like she played cards almost every night, even though it wasn't really that way.
 
Then there were the stories she told. She had the ability to tell the story and keep the attention of our young minds. Her vocabulary painted pictures of her travels to France, Rome, Israel and Vatican City that filled us with awe and wonder. Granny loved a good joke too. It seemed as if she heard every Boudreaux and Thibodaux joke first. If it had been too long between our visits, she would call and tell us jokes over the phone. I remember her having 2 or 3 ready to tell every time we went to see her.
 
Then there were the teenage years. Granny wanted us to enjoy the same things the other kids of the area did. “Crusing the Avenue” one night She took Penny & Me along with a few of our close friends to cruise the avenue. When we came around “the Chance” she actually did a burn out. At first I thought it was an accident then I saw her mischievous grin, and the next time around she did it again and we all laughed and laughed. Granny was a trip. She was so much fun. She knew how to enjoy life.
 
It's been a few days now and I'm sure that she has organized a bridge, po-keno and boo-ray tournaments. She has also already commandeered Heaven's kitchen adding her own splash of Cajun flair to everything. All the while telling jokes to the angels. I can just see her now …. “Hey Michael… Did I tell you the one about Boudreaux and Thibodaux …..?

If Joanie got any of her hostessing and cooking ability from her mother, their home must have been a lovely place to be.. I am grateful for the peaceful way she seemed to have entered into glory. I pray that her family has perfect peace and are joined together in bonds of love to face the days ahead. My prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Eugene , I  will always remember your mom and dad. Pie ce be with you and your family .

Aunt Joan loved being around people and was a great joy to be around.  I was one of many to play Bridge with her.  Deal'em!
We will miss you.

This always comes to mind, so sorry I am using this for you again my dear friend. "Love is stronger than death even though it can't stop death from happening, but no matter how hard death tries it can't separate people from love. It can't take away our memories either. In the end, life is stronger than death." We love you.

I will continue to pray for your family.  My prayer is that you will find comfort in the only one who can provide that comfort; and it is Jesus Christ.

Didn't have the pleaser to know Mrs. Joan but she sure raised a really nice son, Penguin Rodrigue who I have the honor to work with. My deepest symphony to Penguin and the family.

I remember the times that I spent with her as my educator, she was a beautiful person and I will miss her. She was my nanny. Of course, like all the Dupre's she had a wonderfully strong will and quick wit. One of my favorite memories was of her making those fig preserves from the figs that Uncle Chock grew in the back of the house on the bayou. To this day they are still the best that I have ever tasted. Bon Voyage Nan.

I remember Saturdays in the late 60s and early 70s at Aunt Joan's during springtime.  Crawfish, shrimp, and other edibles from undefined sources were available in abundance.  Hungry teenaged boys were always welcome.  God Bless you Aunt Joan.
