

Known as A.G. in Springfield, the day after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Hancock in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was serving in Tokyo Bay at the time of the surrender and earned the Victory Medal.
After the war, he took advantage of the GI Bill and enrolled in Southern State Teachers College, where he met Cleone Cleveland. They married in 1948. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1949 and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Denver in 1954.
Alvin and Cleone had four children, Steven, Joan, Judy, and Mark. They have seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The family moved to Paramount, CA in 1959 and he resided there for the remainder of his life. He was active in the community, coached Little League, and was a leader for Indian Guides, the Boy Scouts, and 4H. He served on the City of Paramount Planning Commission, and was Church Council President from 1996-2000 at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bellflower.
He was one of the first to teach CPR training to high school students at Artesia High School, where he also taught mathematics, drivers education, and woodshop. He retired from the faculty of Artesia High School in 1984.
In retirement, he managed his properties and continued to enjoy his hobbies of traveling, skiing, and snowmobiling. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Cleone Hatwan and their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
The family will deeply miss their dear old Dad.
