William Lewis McDonald was born in Sioux City, Iowa, to the Rev. William Henry McDonald and Pearl Crossley McDonald. He grew up near Lake Charles, Louisiana and Akron, Iowa. He had a wonderful childhood catching alligators, wandering along the Sioux River, and singing for church and community events with his two little sisters, Anita and Nevella. He first met Evelyn Hendricks, his wife of seventy years, on the banks of the Sioux. He followed her to California where they were soon married. Lewis served stateside in the Army Air Corps during WWII, allowing the young couple to travel throughout the West. After the war, they bought a house in the new city of Lakewood which served as a base camp for their summer travels with their daughters. They sang road songs with the girls and duets at the First Christian Church of Bellflower, where Lewis served as an elder for many years.
Lewis has journeyed to meet his wife, Evelyn, who left us just last month. They are with their children Michael Lewis and Michelle Elaine, who went on ahead. They leave behind their daughters Dayla Joy McDonald and Marla Jean McLeod (Bruce), grandchildren Aidan McLeod, Christina Larsen, Eric Larsen, Larissa Curran (Mark), great-granddaughter Emma Curran, and a large and loving extended family. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 17, at 2 p.m., at the First Christian Church of Bellflower. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lewis McDonald's name to the church building fund.
