She was loved and known to many as ‘Aunt Hazel’ through both her biological and adoptive families. Hazel instilled her love of nature in all generations of her family and will be greatly missed by: Janet & Glen Kohar (Mindy & Jake, Kurt & Jem); Matt & Kim Broker (Rachel & Gary Cameron and Isaac, Amy & Chris Harrington and Makenzie); Adam Broker & Chris Basniki; Bruce & Arlene Broker (Hanna Broker & Sam Warner, Caleb Broker & Ali Zorzit); and Dan Broker (Sierra Broker).
She was born on November 29, 1921, in Erin Mills to Wilfrid and Maggie Broker, and was the sister of Harold Broker. The family moved to Westdale in 1940. Hazel began teaching that same year in Oakville, later working at many Hamilton Public Schools, including Strathcona and Holbrook, before retiring in 1977. Living life to the fullest, she was an active member of Westdale United Church, a lifelong member of the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Hamilton Naturalists Club, 4 Corner Seniors, the Camera Club, Wood Duck Newsletter, and many other clubs. She was an avid birder, gardener, and world traveler.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Deerview, Ontario Health, and Home for their excellent care. We would also like to express our gratitude to all those who visited Hazel over the past few years.
A memorial service for Hazel will be held on Friday, January 31 at 1 p.m. at Westdale United Church, 99 North Oval, Hamilton.
In lieu of flowers, donations can made to the charity of your choice.
