Aunt Hazel ( sorry, that’s how I knew her, although merely a friend -)   was always kind, interested and interesting in the rare times we shared.  She  lived a full life through her own determination and  she shared her passions easily with all who were interested and listened just as intently. She inspired respect and love and was buoyed by her family and many friends every day. Her life was meaningful and well-lived and she will be missed.

We will miss you dearly, Aunt Hazel. Thank you for everything you taught us…we will never forget you!  Rest peacefully.  You deserve it!

To a life well lived....let's celebrate the special lady that she was to me and my family.   Hazel was my grandmother's best friend from a young age.  Even though my grandmother's and Hazel lives took them on different paths, they were still always present in each others life.  Aunt Hazel took me under her wing when I decided that Mohawk College was the path for me to further my education.  She sent me on my way with a map and told me which bus would bring me home and then sent me on my way.  My 2 years living with Aunt Hazel allowed me to learn to live away from my family, gain some independence and start to crack the shell to my shyness.  Over the years since then our bond continued to grow stronger and we continued to visit each other.  We would talk at least every month to get caught up on what was going on here in Listowel and in Hamilton.  I loved receiving her annual Christmas letters, even if they sometimes didn't arrive until spring.  When she travelled she always sent me a post card with stories of her adventures, birds she had seen and wild life she encountered.  Whenever she would tell me that she was going away, I would remind her that I would be looking forward to a "Post Card".  It got to the point that she would have to purchase post cards at the airport or create her own version of a post card so that she could mail me one.   I know that she has lived a good life and even though it's hard to see her go I know that she is at peace now.   Love ya always Heather

This is a picture of Aunt Hazel with Pauline & Lee Bentley (Carl & Phyllis's son) taken at their 50th Wedding Anniversary.  Hazel spent the weekend with our family in Listowel and had a great time visiting with all of the Bentley family many of whom she hadn't seen in many years.

Carl & Phyllis Bentley's wedding - Hazel was the maid of honour for my grandmother.  They were best friends growing up and even though they lived miles apart, they enjoyed writing letters to each other every week.  When Aunt Hazel was cleaning out her basement she found letters that she had from my grandmother and sent me a couple of them to have as a keep sake.

I had the pleasure and honour of visiting with Hazel along with L. Sargeant of RWTO in late November.  She shared her many recollections of her teaching career, her family and the many changes  that happened in her long lifetime.  What a remarkable and lovely lady.  Sharon Derkach. "Aunt" (2nd cousin) Hazel was a favorite of mine because of her love of nature and birding along with photography.  Her many birding trips around the world and work with the Bruce Trail and bird watches in the Hamilton were very inspiring.  She will be missed.

Hazel retired from teaching in 1977, and became a member of RWTO and also the co-ed organization, RTOERO.  She greatly  enjoyed being part of our Branch Knitting and Crocheting  Group, which created afghans to donate to unhoused  members of our community.  Even at the age of 99, she donated  a hundred crocheted  squares, enough to make 5 blankets.  Hazel was an amazing role model throughout her life, and her love of the natural environment  was a topic dear to her heart.  I greatly enjoyed our visits over the years.
